Mindful Breathing Exercises for Kids in Bengaluru
Children carry big feelings, just like we do. At Padma Yoga Academy in Bengaluru, I teach simple, playful breathwork—from Bubble Breaths to the calming 4-7-8 technique—to help your child find their focus and inner quiet. Let's make mindfulness a natural part of their day. ✨
Deep breathing is a powerful tool for children. I teach various breathing strategies in my classes to help kids find their calm and focus.
Balloon Breaths are a wonderful introduction to mindfulness. I guide children to imagine their bellies are balloons, filling up with air on the inhale and gently deflating on the exhale.
The 4-7-8 breathing technique is a rhythmic practice that helps reduce anxiety. We practice this simple pranayama exercise to calm the nervous system and prepare for better sleep.
Bunny Breaths are an energetic and imaginative breathing exercise. This technique involves quick, short inhales through the nose, which helps kids feel energized and focused.
STAR Breaths are a safe and relaxing choice for children. This simple technique helps them find their center and feel grounded, especially during moments of stress.
About The Magic of Mindful Breathing
When teaching breathwork to kids, the challenge is not explaining the technique, but keeping them engaged long enough to feel the difference. I do not use long lectures. Instead, we use 'Balloon Breaths' to practice belly breathing or 'Bunny Breaths' for quick bursts of energy. These exercises are integrated directly into our Krida Yoga sessions at my Challaghatta studio, so your child learns to regulate their emotions through play, not pressure. It is about building a toolbox they can use anytime they feel overwhelmed.
Mindfulness for children is often misunderstood as just 'sitting still.' In my experience working with kids aged 5 to 12 here in Bengaluru, it is quite the opposite. It is about movement, imagination, and giving them a physical way to navigate their internal world.
The Techniques We Use
We break down complex pranayama into simple, accessible games:
- Star Breath: Helps ground children during moments of frustration or big transitions.
- 4-7-8 Breathing: A rhythm we practice to calm the nervous system and prepare for rest and better sleep.
- Bubble & Balloon Breaths: Physical metaphors for deep, belly-centered inhalation and exhalation.
These are not just 'tricks.' They are functional tools that help with academic stress, anxiety, and the general overwhelm kids face today.
Why Breathwork Matters
Our sessions, which are part of our monthly kids' yoga and art therapy curriculum, focus on the 'why' behind the breath. When a child learns to control their inhalation and exhalation, they start to self-regulate. They do not need a parent telling them to calm down—they have a 'Bunny Breath' or 'Bubble Breath' they can turn to on their own.
Common Questions
- Is this right for hyperactive kids? Absolutely. These techniques are designed for movement-based learners. We do not ask for stillness; we ask for focus through activity.
- What about age groups? My Challaghatta studio sessions are segmented to ensure the breathwork is developmentally appropriate for ages 5-12.
Whether your child is struggling with school anxiety or just needs a creative outlet, these practices provide a gentle, non-competitive space to evolve from within.
