Authentic Pothichoru: Kerala Lunch Parcels
Imagine your lunch wrapped in a banana leaf, lightly smoked and infused with the earthy aroma of Kerala. This is Pothichoru—a traditional meal packed with layers of rice, curry, and love, delivered fresh across Mumbai.
Pothichoru holds so many memories for me. It's what my Amma used to pack for school trips. This Mother's Day, I recreated that love in a parcel, a thank you to all mothers for their care.
The science and tradition behind the banana leaf. As Dr. Rashmi Shetty explains, the leaf's polyphenols infuse into the hot food, adding antioxidants and a unique flavour. It's health and heritage combined.
This is how I prepare my Amma's Pothichoru. Each element, from the rice to the Mambazha Pulisseri and thoran, is carefully layered before being wrapped, allowing the flavours to meld together beautifully.
Our special Indie Pothichoru for Republic Day. A parcel of gratitude and love, where the colours of our flag are represented by the delicious curries and rice, all wrapped in a smoked banana leaf.
About Pothichoru: A Traditional Parcel of Love
The secret is in the wilt. We take fresh banana leaves and wilt them over an open flame until they are pliable and strong. This simple step does two things: it prevents tearing and, more importantly, imparts a deep, smoky flavour into the rice that you just can't get from plastic or steel containers. It creates a natural, heat-retaining parcel that keeps your meal moist and safe, exactly the way it was done back home.
Pothichoru is not just a packed lunch; it is a layered experience of comfort. When you open that parcel, you are unwrapping a story of tradition. We carefully layer steaming hot matta rice with a 'mahasangam' (confluence) of flavours—Mambazha Pulisseri, Red Amaranth thoran, yam stir-fry, and house-made pickles.
Science meets heritage in this meal. As the food rests inside the wrapped leaf, the heat releases polyphenols from the banana leaf into your food, acting as a natural antioxidant and flavour enhancer. It is a slow, methodical process that allows the spices to meld together, creating a unique profile that develops the longer the parcel sits.
We keep our batches small and our ingredients fresh. Whether it is a weekday lunch or a special festive treat, we aim to bring the soul of a Kerala kitchen to your table. You aren't just ordering food; you are getting a meal that travels well and tastes like a memory from a school trip or a lazy afternoon at home.

I am Sara, and for me, a Pothichoru is nostalgia in a parcel—the taste of childhood and home-cooked love. We don't just pack food; we recreate that feeling of opening a warm, aromatic surprise for lunch. It is simple, sustainable, and entirely authentic.
