Inside the Classroom: Contemporary & Movement Arts Classes
Step into a space where movement meets meditation. Whether you are stepping onto the floor for the first time or returning to deepen your practice, these classes focus on building your own flow through technique, conditioning, and raw expression.
Day one with a new batch is always about building trust and awareness. We work on body improvisation, learning to let go of fear, connect with each other, and understand the basics of getting on and off the floor using the Flying Low technique.
A glimpse from the first day of a new weekend batch at Centre for Kala. It's always a great feeling to start a new journey with eager dancers, setting goals and preparing to push our limits together.
This was the first day of our contemporary class in a new studio. We focused on foundational floorwork and finding a collective flow. Registrations are often open for new beginner batches like this one.
This is a look at the 'Toolbox' students I taught at Dhurii Academy of Arts. We explored everything from ballet basics and weight shifts to improvisation and partner work, making contemporary dance accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
In class, we don't just dance; we celebrate it. Here, we worked on structuring and deconstructing movements to create a new language. It's about moving with intention and enjoying the outcome together.
Practice makes improvements. There is no such thing as perfection, because there is always more room to grow. This is a look at a regular class, moving through ballet basics, flow work, and contemporary techniques.
A beginners' contemporary flow class in session. We are working on a simple sequence to build coordination and understanding of movement. Registrations for these batches are open to anyone wanting to start their dance journey.
About this collection
Every session is a mix. We do not just repeat choreography until it looks right. We start with conditioning and ballet-based floor barre to wake up the muscles, then move into flow sequences and improvisation. It is about understanding how your body moves through space, not just following my lead.
Teaching, to me, is sharing a conversation. My classes across Bangalore—at spaces like Centre for KALA and Dance-Inn—are designed for you to build a foundation that lasts. We focus on 'Flying Low' techniques, weight shifts, and finding the rhythm in your own body.
What to Expect
- Conditioning: We use ballet fundamentals and floor barre to build strength and alignment. It is the boring work that makes the beautiful movement possible.
- Flow & Improvisation: We deconstruct movement to create a language unique to you. It is not about looking perfect. It is about moving with intention.
- Small Groups: I keep batches small, usually 6 to 15 people. This allows me to actually see you, offer alignment corrections, and give feedback that helps you grow.
The Logistics
- Subscriptions: I run monthly subscriptions (8 sessions) for consistent progress. This is where the real changes happen.
- Drop-ins: If you want to test the water without a monthly commitment, single drop-in sessions are available.
- Levels: We have batches for all levels, from absolute beginners to intermediate dancers who want to push their technique. If you need specific attention—for injury recovery or competition prep—I also offer 1-on-1 private coaching.
Come as you are. Whether you are young or old, if you are willing to breathe and move, you belong on the floor.
Suraj
I’m Suraj. I don’t teach dance to create clones; I teach to help you find your own language of movement. My classes are a space where we breathe, condition, and explore—the technique is just the tool to help you express who you are.
