Connecting with the ground is where the magic happens. We shift from gravity to lightness, exploring spirals, rolls, and slides to build a movement language that is entirely your own.

This is a basic contemporary floor work choreography I teach to beginners. It helps them work on circles, spirals, and maintaining continuity in their flow.

An across-the-floor sequence is my all-time favorite way to drill technique. This clip shows a fluid floorwork combination that we practice in class.

A flow combination for my intermediate batch. In these classes, we explore more complex transitions and dynamic movements on the floor.

This is a short clip of a floorwork sequence I was practicing. It's all about finding that fluid, swordfish-like movement across the floor.

Spirals are a key element in contemporary dance. This is a quick drill focusing on the technique of a continuous spiral across the floor.

Another look at a spiral floorwork drill. Mastering this movement is essential for creating dynamic and fluid dance sequences.

Here are two variations of a knee spin. We break down techniques like this in class to build a vocabulary of movement that students can use in their own dance.

About this collection

Floorwork isn't just about tumbling; it’s about understanding how to use your body to absorb momentum. In my classes, I teach you specifically how to use your hands, feet, and knees to slide and recover, so you aren't just crashing into the ground. It’s about physics, control, and finding a softer, fluid landing that feels natural to your body.

Floorwork is often the most intimidating part of contemporary dance, but it is actually the most liberating. When you stop fighting gravity and start using it as a partner, your entire dance vocabulary shifts.

Understanding the Mechanics

We break down the foundational physics of movement. It starts with simple weight distribution. We look at how to roll without impact, how to slide efficiently using your extremities, and how to spiral your spine to create momentum. It is not about strength alone; it is about timing and spatial awareness.

Why This Matters

  • Dynamic Range: You unlock new pathways. Suddenly, you aren't just dancing upright; you’re existing in the full space around you.
  • Injury Prevention: By learning how to use the floor properly, you actually learn how to fall and recover safely. It builds a different kind of core stability.
  • Flow State: The 'flow' we talk about comes from connecting these sequences. Once you stop thinking about the next step and focus on the continuous movement, you reach that meditative state.

What to Expect in Class

We focus on technical drills—knee spins, floor slides, and inversions—but always with the goal of artistic expression. Whether you join me in HSR Layout, JP Nagar, or our other Bengaluru studios, you’ll find that we emphasize quality of movement over repeating choreography. It is about creating a conversation between your body and the surface beneath you. If you are ready to explore your potential, let’s get moving.

I’m Suraj. Dance isn't about rigid rules for me, but about finding a language that feels true to your body. I’ve spent years exploring floorwork and contemporary flow, and I want to help you build that same strength and freedom in your own movement.
