Your First Steps in Pottery

Pottery is a journey of discovery, and you don’t need to be creative to start. Whether you want to slow down with hand-building or learn to center clay on the wheel, my beginner sessions are all about play, process, and finding your own flow.

It was so lovely to have these two friends join the beginner's course together. They created such beautiful and distinct pieces, from a checkered Nerikomi plate to whimsical mugs and bowls. I can't wait to see what they create in the advanced course.

About Your First Steps in Pottery

Most beginners worry about the final result being perfect, but I encourage you to embrace the wonky, imperfect shapes that emerge. In my classes, we focus on the tactile process of kneading and shaping, giving you the freedom to explore Nerikomi or wheel throwing without the pressure to produce a gallery-ready piece on day one.

The journey from raw clay to a finished ceramic object is surprisingly meditative. My beginner foundation course spans 10 sessions, giving us enough time to move past the initial awkwardness and actually get comfortable with the material.

We start with the basics of hand-building. Think coiling, slab building, and pinch pots. It sounds simple, but this is where you learn to listen to the clay. As the saying goes, if it is too kacchi (raw) or too stiff, you learn to adapt rather than force your will upon it. Once your hands are familiar with the texture, we move to the wheel.

Wheel throwing is technical, so we break it down into small, manageable steps: centering, opening, and pulling walls. You will also get introduced to Nerikomi, which uses colored clay to create patterns, and learn the science of glazing and firing.

My studio in Khar West is small and intentional. It’s a shared community space where you will find others on the same learning path, plus Silky and Laila, my resident studio cats. You don't need to bring anything but an apron and an open mind. Everything else—the clay, the tools, the firing—is taken care of here.
