Honing Your Craft: Advanced Pottery & Ceramics
Once you have mastered the basics, our advanced sessions are about finding your own rhythm in clay. Whether you are exploring complex Nerikomi patterns or sculpting large-scale forms, this is where you stop following and start creating your own artistic voice.
This student completed both her beginner and advanced courses with us. For her advanced work, she found her rhythm with the Nerikomi technique, creating this beautiful and calm set of patterned plates and bowls.

In the advanced course, this student fell in love with Nerikomi. She created the most delightful compositions with checks, stripes, and flowers, like this whimsical elephant bell and marbled platters.

About Honing Your Craft
At this level, we move beyond the fundamentals to truly explore your unique artistic signature. Whether you are falling in love with the intricate, marbled patterns of Nerikomi (colored clay) or attempting large-scale sculptural forms that challenge your patience, my role shifts from teacher to guide. We focus on refining your technique, troubleshooting complex shapes, and ensuring your final pieces reflect your personal style rather than just a finished assignment.
Finding Your Rhythm
In our advanced programs, the pressure to be 'perfect' fades. Instead, you develop the ability to read the clay—understanding when it is bahut kacchi (too raw) and needs patience, and when it is ready to be shaped. It is a dialogue, not a dictation.
Technical Depth
We go deep into specific methodologies that define professional-grade work:
- Complex Wheel Throwing: We cover pulling tall, thin-walled cylinders, creating teapots with lidded jars, and mastering double-walled vessels.
- The Nerikomi Path: Many students find their muse here. Nerikomi, the Japanese art of using colored clay to create patterns that run through the entire object, is a highlight of our advanced curriculum. It requires intense preparation and precision, but the results—marbled plates, patterned bowls, and textured vases—are incredibly rewarding.
The Studio Environment
While this is about building skill, it remains a communal space. You are working alongside other dedicated makers, surrounded by the hum of the wheel and our studio cats, Silky and Laila. The studio offers a sanctuary to slow down, focusing on the slow, meditative process that makes ceramics so grounding.
Practical Details
Our advanced courses are structured over 10 sessions. We provide unlimited recycled clay for practice, but specific high-fire stoneware is used for your final, fired pieces. Whether you are looking to build a cohesive collection for your home or simply master a new medium, this is your time to dive in. Remember, we handle all the firing and glazing logistics, so you can keep your focus entirely on the creating.
Mitti Space
I'm Kosha. What started as a tiny corner for my own experiments became Mitti Space, and I'm here to help you turn your curiosity into something tangible. My job is to guide your hands, not just teach you rules, so you can find your own expression in clay.
