About Casa 503: A Spanish-Inspired Haven
We designed this central courtyard as the lungs of the home. By using a slatted roof that filters sunlight, we managed to flood the staircase and living area with natural light while keeping the temperature comfortable without air conditioning. This space is not just about the aesthetics of arched openings and patterned tiles, it is a calculated passive design solution tailored to Bengaluru's specific climate.
Casa 503 captures that Mediterranean spirit where indoor and outdoor living merge. We believe a home should breathe, and the courtyard serves as the anchor for this entire residence.
The Power of Passive Design
Our goal was to eliminate the need for heavy cooling systems. By orienting windows for cross-ventilation and using high-thermal-mass materials like brick and lime plaster, we keep the home naturally cool. The slatted roof above the courtyard acts as a light filter, preventing harsh glare while allowing the house to stay bright throughout the day.
Craftsmanship in the Details
Every element tells a story of local effort. We sourced handcrafted cement tiles for the stair risers and courtyard floors, working closely with artisans to get the pattern balance right. The arched openings are more than a trend, they are structural choices that create a seamless visual flow between the living room and the garden.
Materials & Sustainability
We avoided plastic-heavy finishes. Instead, we used:
- Natural lime-based plaster for breathable walls
- Kota stone and cement tiles for durable, cool flooring
- Reclaimed wood for joinery to add warmth and history
This project was about proving that sustainable, eco-conscious architecture does not have to sacrifice elegance. Whether it is the curve of an arch or the specific layout of the floor tiles, every corner was crafted to be a sanctuary for our clients and their pet, Dorai.
