Courtyard & Light-Filled Home Designs

Integrating central courtyards and double-height volumes to harness natural light and ventilation. We design residences that connect interior spaces with the outdoors.

The upper-level veranda at Nivriti, Chatty’s House, overlooks a central open space, creating connectivity between different parts of the home. The perforated roof design allows dappled sunlight to filter through, creating dynamic light patterns.

The Sharada Residence is designed around a central courtyard that functions as an outdoor room. This space brings light, air, and nature into the core of the house, with features like an open-air shower and integrated landscaping.

Viewed from the interior, the compact courtyard at the Prabhakar Residence acts as a living mural. Large wooden doors fold away to completely open up the living space to this private, plant-filled sanctuary.

A top-down view of the courtyard in the Prabhakar Residence shows a creative use of a narrow space. We designed a vertical garden with staggered planters to transform it into a lush green feature visible from multiple levels of the home.

Sunlight casts strong shadows across the brickwork and window grills at the Reshma Residence. We carefully consider the path of the sun in our designs to create visually interesting moments and naturally illuminate interior spaces.

The small porch and garden at the Reshma Residence serve as a simple yet effective link to the outdoors. This space provides a pleasant seating area and a green buffer from the street, enhancing the home's connection to nature.

This inviting veranda at the Reshma House seamlessly extends the living area into the garden. It is a perfect example of the comfortable, transitional spaces we design to encourage an indoor-outdoor lifestyle.

About this collection

Designing for light requires more than just window placement; it demands a precise study of sun-path and wind direction for passive cooling. We integrate skylights and open-to-sky courtyards to regulate temperature naturally, ensuring interior spaces remain airy and illuminated regardless of the plot size.

At Firm Terra Architects, we view the courtyard as the soul of a residential project. In Bengaluru's climate, a well-placed courtyard functions as an outdoor room that facilitates cross-ventilation, reducing the need for artificial cooling. We start every project by analyzing the sun-path to maximize natural daylight while protecting the interiors from harsh direct heat.

Our approach involves double-height volumes and strategically positioned skylights. This configuration creates a vertical flow of air, which is essential for maintaining comfort in compact urban plots. We often use materials like wire-cut bricks and grit plaster to build these spaces, as these materials hold thermal mass effectively. Whether it is an open-to-sky shower area or a veranda that seamlessly transitions into a garden, our focus is on building physical connections between the home and the outdoors. This methodology is applied to all our projects, from compact urban houses to estate residences, ensuring that every square foot of the built-up area serves a functional purpose in light management and ventilation.
