Our Design Philosophy & Sustainability Methodology
We do not treat sustainability as an optional add-on. We view it as a measurable science, integrating rigorous assessment tools into every project to ensure long-term resilience and efficiency.
We created the Design Sustainability Matrix as a tool to assess and measure a project's sustainability quotient. It is our commitment to transforming the approach to sustainable design from a goal to a measurable science.
Why does sustainability matter? It is the foundation of responsible architecture. Our Design Sustainability Matrix empowers designers and developers to quantify environmental impact and make informed decisions for resilient, future-ready buildings.
The Design Sustainability Matrix evaluates crucial factors like materials, water, energy, and occupant comfort. This bar chart shows a sample sustainability score, providing a clear, data-driven way to identify areas for improvement.
Our matrix works in three simple steps: input project data to get a score, identify areas for improvement, and optimize the design to meet environmental goals. This image shows how we connect this process to biophilic elements like green walls.
We offer our Design Sustainability Matrix as a free, open-access tool for the entire industry. We believe that by sharing our knowledge, we can collectively elevate the sustainability of our built environment.
Our sustainability goals are a comprehensive framework guiding our work. They cover seven key areas: Site & Context, Outdoor Comfort, Indoor Comfort, Energy, Water, Waste Management, and Materials.
We developed our Sustainability Checklist as a structured framework to assess the impact of our designs on the site, context, and ecosystem as a whole.
About this collection
We developed our proprietary Design Sustainability Matrix to quantify environmental impact from day one. Instead of guessing, we use this framework to measure energy efficiency, water usage, and material longevity before a single structural line is drawn. This provides a clear, data-driven roadmap for your project, ensuring the final design balances aesthetic intent with measurable ecological responsibility.
Architecture as a Measurable Science
Sustainability is the foundation of our practice, not a marketing claim. Since 1989, we have refined our approach to move beyond intuition, relying on tools that allow us to predict performance and optimize outcomes. Our process is rooted in two core frameworks: the Design Sustainability Matrix and the Sustainability Checklist.
The Methodology
- Site & Context Integrity: We minimize disturbance to the natural landscape. This involves preserving topsoil, protecting existing water bodies, and orienting buildings to work with the natural topography rather than against it.
- Passive Design Strategies: Our primary goal is to reduce reliance on energy-intensive mechanical systems. We achieve this through strategic building massing, optimized window-to-wall ratios for daylighting, and cross-ventilation layouts that utilize local wind patterns.
- Quantifiable Impact: Our Sustainability Checklist acts as a structured framework to assess every decision. We measure how a building affects its immediate ecosystem, tracking everything from acoustic comfort to outdoor heat island reduction.
Why This Approach Matters
When we plan a healthcare facility, an office campus, or a residential master plan, the focus remains on the 'Universal Grid.' This modular planning allows for phase-wise expansion, ensuring the building can grow as your needs evolve without requiring disruptive, energy-heavy retrofits. By documenting the flora, fauna, and local material availability at the site analysis stage, we create designs that are indigenous to their location. This reduces transportation costs for materials and ensures the building thrives in its specific climatic zone. Our goal is to create architecture that is not just efficient, but regenerative.
Edifice Consultants
We are a team of architects, researchers, and thinkers who have been building for India since 1989. We believe architecture is a form of service, and we focus on creating spaces that are deeply rooted in context and committed to the long-term health of both the environment and the people who inhabit them.
