About The Soul of Pakhavaj

The Pakhavaj is a deeply acoustic instrument, and its sound changes completely based on the room's humidity and temperature. For every event, I arrive at least 45 to 60 minutes early to perform a full tuning of the Dayan and Bayan. This isn't just about pitch; it is about ensuring that the deep, earthy vibration of the drum carries through the entire space, whether it is a small house baithak or a larger auditorium.

While the Tabla is more common in modern settings, the Pakhavaj holds a distinct place in Hindustani classical music, especially in Dhrupad and traditional Kathak performances. Its structure and technique are ancient, requiring a different kind of touch and focus. My training in the Delhi and Farukhabad gharanas informs my approach, allowing me to bring a sense of history and depth to every rhythmic composition I play.

Why the Pakhavaj is Unique

Unlike modern drums, the Pakhavaj produces a resonant, bass-heavy sound that feels closer to the voice of the earth. When I perform a 'Paran' in Chautaal, the weight and complexity of the rhythm are intentional. It demands an attentive audience and a setting that respects the silence between the beats.

My Performance Approach

  • Classical Recitals: My solo work focuses on traditional compositions, including complex Peshkar and Kaidas. I believe in demonstrating the instrument's purity without over-amplifying.
  • Dance Accompaniment: Accompanying Kathak dancers is where I feel most connected to the rhythm. The dialogue between the dancer's footwork and the drum beats is a live conversation that cannot be scripted.
  • Fusion & Concerts: I have had the privilege of playing alongside masters at venues like Triveni Kala Sangam and various G20 events. Whether I am jamming with a sitarist or playing in a percussion ensemble for a fashion show, I focus on blending the ancient sound of the Pakhavaj with the needs of the moment.

If you are planning an event where you want the audience to experience the roots of Indian classical music, I am happy to discuss how we can integrate this sound into your program.
