About Bringing Clay to Life: Decoration & Finishing

Before you book a session, it is helpful to know that these finishing techniques are as much about patience as they are about creativity. Whether you are learning to scratch through slip with sgraffito or carefully inlaying color into a carved design, your piece will need to go through the drying and firing process at the studio, which typically takes about three weeks before it is food-safe and ready for your home.

Decoration is where a simple bowl becomes a personal story. In our Prabhadevi studio, we focus on three distinct methods that add character and depth to your work.

Sgraffito

This is a process of carving through a layer of colored slip to reveal the clay underneath. It requires a steady hand and a bit of patience, but the high-contrast results are worth the effort. It is an excellent way to add complex line work to your pieces.

Ceramic Painting

We use food-safe underglazes to paint designs onto bisque-fired ware. This is perhaps the most intuitive method. Whether you are adding a subtle floral motif or a bold, abstract pattern, this technique allows for a wide range of color and detail.

The Inlay Technique

This involves carving a design directly into the leather-hard clay, filling the grooves with colored slip, and then scraping back the excess. It creates a clean, embedded pattern that feels part of the vessel itself, rather than something applied on top.

All these techniques require the clay to be at the right consistency, which is why we guide you through the process step-by-step. You do not need to be an expert artist to start. The focus is on the meditative nature of the work. You will leave with a piece you have truly made your own, ready to be fired in our kiln and enjoyed for years to come.
