Sgraffito is where painting meets sculpting. Come carve your design into clay in my Ghatkopar studio, where we turn simple plates into personal pieces of art.

This is a perfect example of a finished Sgraffito plate. The intricate floral pattern was carefully carved by a student, and after firing and glazing, the design really comes to life with a rich, vibrant finish.

Watch the Sgraffito process unfold. You start by choosing your base color, creating your vision, and then using carving tools to reveal the pattern underneath. It's a satisfying process that turns a simple plate into a personal artwork.

About Sgraffito Art: Carve Your Story

Think of Sgraffito as a drawing practice that happens on clay. You start by painting your base, and then you use a fine tool to carve out your design. It is incredibly meditative because every scratch you make reveals the lighter clay underneath. You do not need to be an expert illustrator to make this work; simple, bold patterns often look the most striking on finished stoneware.

The Magic of Sgraffito

Sgraffito is an Italian technique, but here at the studio, we make it feel like a weekend therapy session. The process is simple but rewarding. First, we apply a layer of underglaze to your wet clay piece. Once that settles, you pick up your carving tool and start scratching away the top layer. Because the clay underneath is a different color, your drawing instantly pops out with sharp, clean lines.

Why Carve Your Own Plate?

Unlike mass-produced ceramics, a Sgraffito piece is carved by your own hand. I have seen students carve everything from complex zodiac signs and yin-yang symbols to simple, swaying floral patterns. The best part? You do not need to be a trained artist. The beauty lies in the imperfect, organic lines that you create. It is a slow, tactile process that helps you switch off from the Mumbai rush and focus entirely on the rhythm of the carving tool.

What You Get

In our Ghatkopar studio sessions, I provide the raw clay plates, the tools, and the underglazes. You bring your imagination. After you are done, I handle the technical side: I let the piece dry, bisque fire it, apply a food-safe glossy glaze, and glaze-fire it again. You get a fully functional, microwave-safe ceramic plate that you made from scratch. Whether you want to gift it or display it on your wall, it will be uniquely yours.

Hey, I am Aparnaa, the Chief Clay Officer at Studio Hands in Clay. I started this space because I believe pottery is a conversation with yourself, and Sgraffito is my favourite way to express that. When you are at the studio, expect a terrace vibe, good music, and plenty of chai while we carve away the stress.
