Architecture Defined by Earth, Wood, and Stone
We believe architecture is about the honesty of raw materials. Explore how we use local stone, custom earth plasters, and timber joinery to create spaces that feel grounded in their landscape rather than placed upon it.
We are always learning and exploring new techniques in earth construction. These sample tiles showcase a range of earth plaster finishes, each with a unique color and texture derived from different soil compositions and pigments.
Our material library is a constant source of inspiration. These jars contain soil and aggregate samples from various locations, which we use to develop our custom, site-specific plaster and flooring finishes.
A glimpse into the process of creating sprayed earth plaster with our collaborators at BC Architects. This innovative technique allows for the rapid application of earth finishes, and we are excited to bring this knowledge to our projects in India.
A cross-section model demonstrating the layers of an earth-based flooring system. This type of educational tool is invaluable for understanding the technical aspects of sustainable construction methods like rammed earth and earth blocks.
An artisan mixes pigments into a batch of lime plaster. For each project, we develop a unique color palette that complements the architecture and the surrounding environment, ensuring every home has its own distinct identity.
A block of earth-based plaster sits atop the raw material from which it was made. This simple image illustrates the transformative process of turning raw, local soil into a beautiful and durable building material.
The process of creating custom plaster finishes is entirely hands-on. Here, an artisan mixes and tests the consistency of a new batch, a crucial step in achieving the desired texture and color.
A triptych showing the raw materials and process of creating our custom wall renders. We use a variety of locally sourced pigments, minerals, and crushed terracotta to achieve a rich and layered finish.
A sample of a finished plaster surface next to its color swatch. The final result is a soft, textured wall with subtle variations in tone, giving it a depth and character that cannot be achieved with paint.
A sample of a granite wall, showing the precise joinery and textured finish of the stone. We work closely with stonemasons to select and craft each block, celebrating the natural beauty of the material.
About A Palette of Earth, Wood, and Stone
We do not select materials from a catalog; we develop them. Every wall render, plaster finish, and flooring texture you see here is the result of on-site experimentation with local minerals, pigments, and soil compositions. This hands-on process allows us to create a unique color palette for your home that responds to the specific light and climate of your land.
At our studio, we view materials as the bones and skin of a home. We avoid conventional, sterile finishes in favor of methods that age gracefully and connect the structure to its environment. Whether it is the cool, tactile surface of hand-troweled lime plaster or the rugged, load-bearing weight of locally quarried granite, these choices are intentional.
Our approach varies by geography. For our Himalayan projects, we prioritize locally sourced stone that withstands high-altitude weather while blending into the hillside. In our coastal villas, we select basalt that weathers beautifully against salt air. We collaborate closely with traditional stonemasons, timber framers, and artisans to ensure the technical execution matches our vision. This is architecture that breathes. By utilizing passive cooling, cross-ventilation, and natural pigments, we create spaces that feel solid underfoot and warm to the touch. We are not interested in showpieces; we are interested in crafting a home that feels like it has always belonged to the earth.
Case Design
We are a Mumbai-based design studio, but our work often takes us to remote farms, coastal sites, and mountain slopes. We focus on building homes with an honest approach, prioritizing raw materials and traditional craftsmanship over mass-produced solutions.
