Heritage Architecture and Modern Interior Design
We bridge the gap between historic charm and contemporary needs. Explore our featured work, ranging from detailed heritage restorations in Bengaluru to new homes designed with historic soul.
This transition space at the Bangalore Club captures my approach to adaptive reuse. The custom PVC wallpaper, featuring illustrations of historic Indian architecture and peacocks, creates a narrative wall that guides members through the health club while honoring the building's colonial roots.
Modern wellness amenities, like these new steam and sauna rooms, are seamlessly integrated into the heritage setting of the Bangalore Club. The design uses warm wood paneling and clear signage to create a functional, spa-like experience that respects the original structure.
In the ladies' washroom, a feature wall of patterned blue tiles provides a vibrant contrast to the warm wood cabinetry and colonial gold stone countertops. The custom-framed mirrors with rounded corners soften the space, blending classic and contemporary design elements.
For a modern duplex residence, I drew inspiration from Regency-era elegance to create a living room that feels both grand and comfortable. A bookmatched marble feature wall, fluted wood paneling, and integrated LED lighting come together to form a space that is sophisticated and livable.
Detail is everything in historic preservation. This close-up of the gents' washroom sink shows the interplay of textures, from the speckled colonial gold stone to the smooth ceramic basin and the classic design of the chrome faucet, all set against a backdrop of decorative tiles.
This design board illustrates the material palette for the ladies' handwash area, showcasing the thoughtful selection of finishes. It highlights the art leather for seating, colonial-style storage, matte beige tiles, and decorative highlight tiles that come together to create a cohesive and elegant space.
A 3D axonometric view reveals the strategic space planning for the club's renovation, which I call 'The Sable Edit'. This technical drawing shows how I reconfigured the layout to improve flow and function, clearly zoning areas for changing, showers, and wellness treatments.
About this collection
When we take on heritage restoration, our priority is adaptive reuse that feels invisible. We retain the architectural quirks, such as colonial archways and high ceilings, while upgrading the hidden systems. From installing decentralized ventilation in humid historic zones to sourcing era-appropriate materials like colonial gold stone, we ensure the building functions for modern life while keeping its historical soul intact.
At Amālgrain Studio, we believe architecture is a dialogue between legacy and efficiency. Our approach to interior restoration begins with a deep site analysis, where we map out structural constraints and climate factors. Whether it is a colonial-era club or a new duplex, we focus on material integrity and long-term resilience.
For our heritage projects, including our work on the Bangalore Club, we prioritize:
- Material Retention: We salvage and repair existing features rather than replacing them entirely.
- Modern Systems Integration: We embed technology, like smart sensors, decentralized ventilation, and upgraded plumbing, into old shells without disrupting the aesthetic.
- Climate Responsiveness: Even in interiors, we consider sun paths and airflow to ensure the space remains comfortable throughout the year.
We also offer dedicated design consultancy for those navigating the complexities of historic properties. We provide photorealistic 3D renders, detailed construction drawings, and material sourcing strategies that honor the site's history while meeting today's building standards. Our work aims to be regenerative, creating spaces that stand the test of time while functioning efficiently in the present.
Amalgrain Studio
We started Amālgrain Studio because we love places, not just buildings. Our team spends as much time on site covered in steel dust as we do at our desks, ensuring that our sketches actually translate into well-built spaces. We are here to help you reimagine your property with a deep respect for its roots.
