Heritage Interior Design: Reimagining Classic Spaces

Transitional spaces like passages often get neglected. At the iconic Bangalore Club, we reimagined these areas to guide members through a visual narrative, blending colonial aesthetics with modern functionality.

This transition space at the Bangalore Club captures my approach to adaptive reuse. The custom PVC wallpaper, featuring illustrations of historic Indian architecture and peacocks, creates a narrative wall that guides members through the health club while honoring the building's colonial roots.

This annotated image details the elements of the focus wall on the stair landing. It points out the art leather cushion seating, the PVC wallpaper, the colonial-style mirror with black beading, and the arched storage nook, all working together to create a functional and beautiful space.

An arched mirror elongates the passage and reflects the heritage-themed wallpaper, creating an illusion of greater space and light. The addition of indoor plants in a wooden planter introduces a biophilic element, softening the architecture.

This view shows the interplay of elements in the stairwell passage. The heritage wallpaper, custom wooden cabinetry, and focused gallery lighting on the opposite wall create a balanced and thoughtfully composed corridor that is both a passage and a destination.

Even simple walls are treated with care. In the passage leading to the gym, I used simple PVC beading to create framed sections for a notice board and artwork, adding a layer of architectural detail to an otherwise plain surface.

About this collection

When working on a space as storied as the Bangalore Club, we do not just add decor. We craft a flow. For these transitional passages, we used custom PVC wallpaper with heritage motifs to define the route, paired with arched mirrors and focused gallery lighting. This was about transforming a purely functional corridor into a destination that honors the building's soul.

Why Transitions Matter

In historic buildings, hallways and stairwells are often seen as wasted space. We disagree. These areas are the connective tissue of a structure. By improving the lighting, circulation, and aesthetic continuity, we change how people feel as they move from the lobby to the private club areas. It is about creating a sense of arrival.

The Technical Approach

Preserving history requires a careful balance. We used heavy-duty vinyl flooring for durability, ensuring these high-traffic zones handle the wear of daily use without losing their colonial charm. The wall treatments are a specific choice. We employed custom-printed PVC wallpaper to tell a visual story, while archival-style beading and arched mirrors add depth and reflection. This creates an illusion of space in narrow corridors. We also installed targeted, warm-toned lighting to highlight specific features, ensuring the space feels inviting rather than clinical.

Applying This to Your Property

Whether you are managing a heritage property in Malleshwaram or a modern duplex that needs a touch of classic elegance, our process remains the same. We study the site, identify the elements worth saving, and integrate modern amenities like sensors or better ventilation without disrupting the character of the architecture. We do not just renovate. We ensure your space works for your life today while respecting its roots.
