Bangalore Club: The Ladies' Sanctuary Restoration
Restoring historic spaces like the Bangalore Club requires a delicate balance. We preserve the original colonial character while integrating modern comfort and essential upgrades for today's members.
An elegant wooden archway frames the entrance to the ladies' section, immediately establishing a sense of classic design. This view highlights the custom shoe rack and storage unit, blending functionality with the overall heritage aesthetic.
In the ladies' washroom, a feature wall of patterned blue tiles provides a vibrant contrast to the warm wood cabinetry and colonial gold stone countertops. The custom-framed mirrors with rounded corners soften the space, blending classic and contemporary design elements.
This design board illustrates the material palette for the ladies' handwash area, showcasing the thoughtful selection of finishes. It highlights the art leather for seating, colonial-style storage, matte beige tiles, and decorative highlight tiles that come together to create a cohesive and elegant space.
A close-up view highlights the rich texture of the colonial gold stone wall panels and the custom wooden frame of the mirror. The turned wood detail on the mirror's pivot mechanism is a small nod to traditional craftsmanship.
The executed ladies' WC combines different tile textures for a subtle, layered effect. A beige highlight tile creates a wainscoting effect, while succulents and warm, indirect lighting contribute to a tranquil and refreshing atmosphere.
About this collection
When you work with heritage buildings, the challenge is hiding modern comfort behind classic aesthetics. We addressed this in the Ladies’ Sanctuary by replacing dated fixtures with discreet, decentralized ventilation and tactile materials like Colonial Gold stone, ensuring the room feels refreshed but rooted in history.
Heritage restoration is rarely just about aesthetics. It requires a deep understanding of how a building breathes. In this project, we had to manage the humidity and structural quirks common in historic shells without erasing the character of the space.
We replaced old, inefficient plumbing with modern sensor-based valves and upgraded the ventilation using decentralized systems. These allow us to maintain air quality without disrupting the wall integrity or the colonial aesthetic.
Material selection was equally vital. We chose a mix of patterned blue tiles for visual depth and Colonial Gold stone panels to keep the space grounded in its history. The art-leather seating and arched mirrors were custom-designed to bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern convenience.
Whether it is a private historic bungalow or a larger public club in NammaBengaluru, our approach is consistent. We identify the structural limitations, respect the original design intent, and then layer in the necessary upgrades to ensure the space is functional for decades to come.
Amalgrain Studio
We do not treat old buildings as museum pieces. We see them as living structures that deserve a second act. Our work involves blending the colonial charm found in NammaBengaluru with the modern utility required for life today.
