About Sangat: The Art of Accompaniment
Sangat is not just about keeping the beat. It is a deep, responsive conversation where I listen to the melody—whether it is a sitar, sarod, or vocal performance—and provide a rhythmic foundation that supports, never overpowers. When I am on stage, my focus is entirely on the main artist’s needs, ensuring that every stroke I play enhances the mood and flow of their performance.
My approach to accompaniment is built on the foundation of the Ajrada Gharana. When I am accompanying a maestro like Pandit Sajan Mishra ji or Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan sahab, my role is to act as a silent support, anticipating their improvisations before they happen. This requires more than just technical skill; it demands a deep, intuitive understanding of the raag and the specific emotional arc of the concert.
Technical Precision in Performance
- Acoustic Awareness: I insist on a thorough 30-45 minute sound check before any performance. This ensures the tabla's resonance is balanced with the main artist’s voice or instrument, preventing any clash in frequencies.
- Stage Coordination: I bring my own professional 'Black Wood' tabla sets, but I work closely with the sound team regarding microphone placement to capture the clarity of the bols without needing heavy compression.
- Gharana Legacy: My rhythmic vocabulary is rooted in the unique compositions of the Ajrada Gharana. Whether I am providing 'lehra' support or driving a complex rhythmic cycle, I maintain the stylistic integrity of our lineage.
What to Expect
When you hire me for a concert, you are not just booking a percussionist. You are booking a partner in your performance. I am comfortable with both spontaneous improvisations and pre-planned compositions. My goal is to ensure the main artist feels supported, allowing them the creative freedom to explore their raga fully. If you are planning a classical music event in Delhi NCR or anywhere in India, I am happy to discuss how my style of sangat can complement your program.
Akram Khan
I am Akram Khan, and I live for the rhythm of the tabla. Coming from the Ajrada Gharana, my music is a tradition passed down from my father, Ustad Hashmat Ali Khan, and my gurus. My work as an accompanist is my way of paying tribute to the maestros I share the stage with.
