Witness a spontaneous rhythmic conversation where two masters trade complex compositions. A unique performance format that highlights the best of Ajrada and other gharanas.

A memorable tabla jugalbandi with my dear brother and fellow artist, Pandit Yogesh Samsi ji. We performed together at the Guru ML Koser festival, organised by Pracheen Kala Kendra.

Here you can see me speaking to the audience during the duet with Pandit Yogesh Samsi ji. It is always a pleasure to explain the nuances of our performance to the listeners.

About Jugalbandi: A Rhythmic Dialogue

When I perform a jugalbandi, it is more than just playing in sync; it is a live, rhythmic conversation. My partner and I constantly improvise, anticipating each other’s moves, to build a tension that resolves beautifully. It requires deep mutual respect and the ability to listen intently to every bol, or stroke, the other artist plays.

A jugalbandi is the ultimate test of a percussionist's ability to listen and react. Unlike a solo performance where the narrative is entirely my own, a duet is a dynamic exchange. We often trade complex rhythmic puzzles, challenging each other to match the speed and precision of the Ajrada Gharana’s traditional compositions.

The Art of Rhythmic Battle

We do not just play simultaneously. The performance revolves around the concept of Sawaal-Jawab, or call-and-response. One artist presents a rhythmic phrase, and the other must echo or improvise upon it. This creates a spontaneous dialogue that keeps the audience engaged. It is intense, raw, and full of energy.

Why Choose a Jugalbandi?

This format is ideal for music festivals, cultural events, and high-profile gatherings where the audience appreciates technical brilliance. It showcases the versatility of the tabla, showing how it can be both a solo instrument and a collaborative force.

Technical Requirements

Bringing two percussion maestros together requires careful planning. We manage the technical rider for complex microphone placement to ensure both instruments are balanced for the audience. Whether we are mixing gharanas or collaborating with a fellow tabla player, the focus remains on acoustic clarity and the chemistry between the two artists. I coordinate with my team and the event organisers to handle all stage setup and instrument tuning, allowing you to simply enjoy the music.

I am Ustad Akram Khan, and for me, a jugalbandi is the purest test of a musician's listening. I love the spontaneity of sharing the stage with another percussionist, as it allows us to push the boundaries of the Ajrada Gharana and create something entirely new together.
