Passing on the traditional techniques of the Ajrada Gharana through structured guidance and deep musical exploration.

The role of a tabla player in accompaniment is to listen and respond. Here, I share some thoughts on how to improvise and match the patterns of a lead instrumentalist, a key aspect of the art of 'sangat'.

About Sharing the Knowledge

Learning the tabla is not just about mastering speed or volume. It is a form of baatcheet, or conversation, between the instrument and the student. In my sessions, we focus on the art of listening, understanding the nuances of how to respond to a melody, and the technical precision required for clear and resonant bols.

My workshops are designed to preserve the unique compositions and technical rigor of the Ajrada Gharana. Whether you are a beginner looking to understand the fundamentals or an experienced player seeking to refine your technique, my goal is to guide you through the specific bols (strokes) and layakari (rhythmical patterns) that define our tradition.

We cover several core aspects in these masterclasses:

  • Foundation and Technique: Establishing a strong base in posture, hand positioning, and the essential sounds of the dayan and bayan.
  • Padhant: Training the voice to recite rhythmic patterns before executing them on the tabla, which is crucial for internalizing the tempo.
  • The Art of Accompaniment: How to listen and improvise when playing alongside vocalists or instrumentalists, ensuring you support rather than overshadow the melody.
  • Compositional Depth: Working on specific relas and qaidas that have been passed down through my father, Ustad Hashmat Ali Khan, and our ancestors.

This is not a space for quick fixes. It is a place for riwaaz (practice) and dedication to the craft. I encourage students to bring their commitment, and in return, I offer the depth of knowledge I have inherited over a lifetime.

I grew up with the rhythms of the Ajrada Gharana, and it is my honour to pass this tradition to the next generation. My workshops are designed for those who want to move beyond the basics and understand the true language of the tabla.
