A dedicated tabla solo recital brings the intricate compositions and rhythmic cycles of the Ajrada Gharana to the forefront, accompanied by a traditional lehra.

A still from my performance at the Hoxton concert, organised by Kala Sudha UK. The focus required for a solo recital is immense, and I am thankful for an audience that listens with such attention.

Another moment from the Hoxton concert. Here, my hands are in the midst of playing a complex rhythmic pattern, a hallmark of the Ajrada style of tabla playing.

As a mark of respect to the legends, I am presenting a 'rela' composition of the great Pandit Shamta Prasad ji of the Benares gharana. It is important to honour the masters of all traditions.

A glimpse from my recital at the Ramakrishna Mission in Kolkata. It was a beautiful evening dedicated to music, and I am grateful to Pt. Abhijit Banerjee ji for the invitation.

Performing at the prestigious Swaramangesh festival in Goa. The stage was set for a tabla duet, where two artists engage in a spontaneous rhythmic conversation.

A wider view of the stage at the Swaramangesh festival. You can see the beautiful setup and the portrait of the master in whose honour the festival is held. It was a truly memorable evening.

A moment of interaction with my fellow artist during the tabla duet in Goa. Listening is as important as playing in a jugalbandi performance.

Deep in the rhythm during my performance at the Swaramangesh festival. The energy from a large, appreciative audience is always a great inspiration for any artist.

Performing a tabla solo at the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra ji Festival in Bhubaneswar. It is an honour to play at an event named after such a legendary guru of dance.

Offering my salaam to the audience and the stage at the festival in Bhubaneswar. An artist is nothing without the blessings and respect of the listeners.

About Tabla Solo: The Voice of the Ajrada Gharana

My approach to a solo recital is rooted in the distinct vocabulary of the Ajrada Gharana, focusing on the clarity of 'bols' rather than mere speed. When planning your event, please note that a successful recital depends on acoustic precision; I require a proper wooden riser and specific microphone placement to capture the full resonance of the Dayan and Bayan. This technical setup ensures the audience experiences the subtlety of the compositions as they were meant to be heard.

The Ajrada Gharana Tradition

Performing a solo recital is an open book of a musician's 'riwaaz'. Unlike 'Sangat' (accompaniment), where my primary role is to support a vocalist or instrumentalist, a solo performance allows me to explore the complete rhythmic vocabulary inherited from my father, Ustad Hashmat Ali Khan, and our lineage.

What to Expect

During a recital, the tabla is the voice of the performance. We explore:

  • Rare Compositions: I present specific 'qaidas' and 'relas' that are unique to the Ajrada style.
  • The Melodic Loop: A live 'Lehra' (on harmonium or sarangi) is essential to provide the melodic time-cycle against which I improvise.
  • Technical Explanation: To bridge the gap between complex mathematics and listener appreciation, I often include 'Padhant' (oral recitation) to explain the rhythmic structure or 'Layakari' during the concert.

Technical Requirements

Whether performing in Delhi NCR or for national festivals, my priority is the integrity of the sound. I bring my own instruments, but I rely on organizers for:

  • A stable, non-resonant stage or riser.
  • Professional sound engineering with adequate time for a 60-minute sound check to balance the acoustic tone.
  • Proper green room access for instrument tuning and preparation.

It is my 'saubhagya' (good fortune) to share the spirit of sangeet with those who listen. I welcome you to reach out for a conversation about how we can craft a performance that suits the mood of your event.
