Tabla Solo: The Voice of the Ajrada Gharana
In a solo recital, the tabla takes center stage. I present intricate and powerful compositions passed down through generations of my Ajrada Gharana, accompanied by a simple melodic loop called a 'lehra' on the harmonium or sarangi. This format showcases the technical depth, complex rhythmic cycles, and unique 'bols' (strokes) of our tradition.
Jugalbandi: A Rhythmic Dialogue
A Jugalbandi is an energetic and improvisational duet between two tabla artists. We trade complex compositions, challenge each other with rhythmic puzzles, and build a spontaneous dialogue on stage. This format highlights the contrasting and complementary styles of different gharanas or artists.
Sangat: The Art of Accompaniment
My role in 'Sangat' is to provide rhythmic support that enhances the performance of the main artist, whether it is a vocalist or an instrumentalist playing the sitar, sarod, or santoor. It requires deep listening and the ability to complement the main artist's improvisations without overpowering them. This includes performances with renowned artists like Begum Parveen Sultana ji and Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan.
