At Chimes Montessori, we refer to these as 'Exercises of Practical Life.' While they may look like simple chores to an adult, for a child between the ages of 2 and 6, they are the foundation of everything else they will learn.
Why Practical Life Skills Matter
Traditional classrooms often prioritize worksheets, but we prioritize the real world. By engaging in tasks like food preparation, hand washing, and caring for classroom plants, children develop the fine motor control and concentration necessary for reading, writing, and mathematics. These activities are designed to be purposeful. When a child cleans a spill, they learn responsibility and gain an understanding of cause and effect.
