Practical Life Skills: Montessori Learning by Doing
At Kriya, we believe practical tasks are the first steps to independence. From shelling peas to cleaning spills, we use real-life activities to build the concentration, fine motor control, and self-confidence every child needs to thrive.
This video showcases our toddlers engaged in various practical life skills. You can see them shelling peas, washing hands, and cutting soft foods, all activities that build their independence and fine motor control.
As this video explains, studies show that children who do chores develop greater confidence and competence. Here, our students are seen sweeping, grinding, and sorting, taking responsibility for their environment.
A toddler carefully puts on her own sandals. This simple act of self-care is a huge step towards independence and builds self-esteem, showing that she can do it herself.
Our toddlers are busy at work stacking cups and peeling a banana. These activities are not just play; they are purposeful tasks that refine motor skills and teach practical life lessons.
A toddler is completely focused on shelling beans. This practical life activity requires concentration and develops the pincer grasp, which is essential for learning to write.
Is your toddler a picky eater? This video offers tips, showing how involving children in food preparation, like making a simple salad, can make eating more fun and appealing.
From making popcorn to mixing bhel, our food activities are a feast for the senses. These group activities teach children about ingredients, following steps, and the joy of sharing a meal they helped create.
Our children are making their own mehendi paste from a plant in our school garden. This activity connects them to nature and culture while engaging their senses of touch and smell.
A child uses a dustpan and brush to clean up. Taking care of the classroom is an important practical life skill that teaches responsibility and respect for the shared environment.
This video highlights the many things a toddler can do, from opening their own bottle to climbing stairs. We encourage this growing independence in a safe and supportive way.
About Learning by Doing: Practical Life Skills
When a child at Kriya sits down to shell peas or pour water, they are not just helping out; they are refining their pincer grasp and building the focus needed for writing later on. We set up these stations with child-sized tools, allowing them to succeed without an adult intervening. It is quiet, deliberate work that lays the groundwork for their entire academic journey.
The 'Practical Life' area is where our Montessori day begins. Many parents worry about the mess, but we see effort and growth. When a student washes their hands, sweeps the floor, or peels a banana, they are developing self-regulation and a sense of order that translates into every other area of learning.
Why these tasks matter
- Fine Motor Control: Activities like peeling fruit or using tweezers strengthen the hand muscles and prepare the fingers for holding a pencil.
- Independence: Children learn to care for themselves. When a toddler puts on their own shoes or manages their own bag, they gain the autonomy that builds deep self-esteem.
- Concentration: Repeating a cycle of work, such as pouring grains or polishing a surface, helps a child develop the ability to sustain attention, which is vital for later academic subjects like Math and Language.
Our Environment
We do not use plastic toys that offer limited engagement. We use real glass, metal, and wood. If a glass breaks, we learn to clean it up safely, and we learn that mistakes are just part of the process. Our classrooms in Kalyan Nagar are designed specifically for this; with low, accessible shelves, reachable water dispensers, and ample space to move. Whether your child is in our Toddler Community or the Primary Casa program, these skills are the first step toward the focus they will need as they move into Grades 1 to 3 and beyond.
