Backbending and Spinal Flexibility Classes in Rajouri Garden
Backbends can feel intimidating, but they are essential for fixing posture and relieving chronic stiffness. At my Rajouri Garden studio, we use props and hands-on adjustments to make sure you progress safely, whether you are a beginner or looking to master advanced poses.
Today's lesson is backbending. This video shows a sequence from our class, including my demonstration of an advanced variation and how I provide hands-on support to students in different stages of their practice.
The wall is a fantastic prop for safely unlocking deeper backbends. In our advanced backbending batch, students practice Purna Ustrasana (Full Camel Pose) with wall support to improve technique, alignment, and confidence.
Here are some drills that can significantly improve your backbending. We use props like chairs and blocks to build strength and flexibility incrementally, making advanced postures more accessible.
A yoga wheel can transform your backbend practice. I am providing a physical adjustment to a student, helping her use the wheel to open her thoracic spine and deepen the pose safely.
This technique, using a strap and blocks, is excellent for improving your backbending. The strap helps open the shoulders while the blocks provide elevation and support for the back, allowing for a more restorative stretch.
A glimpse into a backbending session at my Rajouri Garden studio. With personalized guidance and the use of a yoga wheel, students can safely work on increasing their spinal flexibility and strength.
At the studio, we use specialized equipment like this wall ladder to practice backbends. This provides a stable and adjustable support system for students to work on poses like Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose) and Halasana (Plow Pose).
This is an example of an assisted stretch we do in our intermediate and advanced classes. This partner work helps to deepen the backbend and release tension in the spine under expert supervision.
Pushing your limits safely is the goal. Here, a student receives assistance to move into a deeper expression of Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), enhancing flexibility in the spine and opening the chest.
About Backbending & Spinal Flexibility
I do not believe in forcing the spine into a shape. In my studio, we use specific props like wall ropes, yoga wheels, and blocks to support your body weight during practice. This allows you to find your natural range of motion, safely opening your thoracic spine without putting unnecessary pressure on your lower back.
Many people live with chronic back pain due to long hours of sitting or incorrect posture. Backbending is not just about showing off flexible poses, it is a targeted therapy to restore the natural curve of your spine and counteract the slouching that comes with modern life.
My Approach to Spinal Health
In our Rajouri Garden studio, we break down complex asanas into actionable drills. We focus on:
- Safe Progression: We start with foundational movements, using blocks and straps to build the strength needed before attempting deeper bends.
- Prop-Based Training: Wall ropes and yoga wheels provide the stability you need to safely stretch your chest, shoulders, and spine. This approach makes advanced poses like Ustrasana (Camel Pose) or Chakrasana (Wheel Pose) achievable for regular students.
- Hands-On Correction: As a yoga therapist, I personally guide your alignment. I ensure you are engaging the right muscles, not just collapsing into your joints.
Why This Matters
Beyond just flexibility, these sessions help with:
- Posture Correction: Reversing the 'tech-neck' and rounded shoulders from office work.
- Pain Relief: Alleviating stiffness in the cervical and lumbar regions.
- Breath Capacity: Opening the chest allows for deeper, fuller breaths, which reduces daily stress.
Whether you are joining for therapeutic back relief or to level up your existing yoga practice, my goal is to give you a strong, pain-free back that feels younger.
