Who says grammar has to be boring? At Yellow Brick Way, we turn language into a game where kids don't just learn words—they fall in love with them.

This simple sight word activity packs in so much learning. We practice reading the words, discuss tastes and textures of the "pizza" toppings, and create funny sentences together.

"I do and I understand." This activity brings that quote to life. Students use word cards to build and read sentences, turning a phonics lesson into an interactive and physical game.

"It's fun to have fun, but you have to know how." Our students channel their inner Cat in the Hat, embracing the playful side of learning while practicing their performance skills.

About Fun with Words: Games & Activities

We believe learning sticks when it feels like play, not a chore. Whether we are building funny sentences from sight-word 'pizza' toppings or turning phonics into a competitive team game, every session is designed to make English feel accessible and exciting for every child.

In my classroom, we trade rows of desks for circles and workbooks for props. The goal is to move past rote memorization, which often makes children dislike reading, and instead create a space where phonics, vocabulary, and grammar become part of an active, joyful experience.

How We Make Language Stick

My approach leans heavily on gamification. We use custom-made materials like word-card Scrabble and sentence-building challenges to help children visualize how parts of speech connect. By using tactile elements—like our 'sight word pizza' activity—students aren't just reading words; they are physically constructing sentences. This sensory engagement is particularly helpful for younger students who are just starting to decode complex texts.

Building Confidence Through Play

We also integrate Trinity College London frameworks into these fun sessions. While the kids are busy playing games or acting out stories, they are actually practicing the 'Big 4'—pause, phrasing, emphasis, and pitch. This allows shy children to find their voice in a low-pressure environment before they ever have to stand up and deliver a formal presentation. For those struggling with phonology or reading lag, these games act as a bridge, removing the fear of being 'wrong' and replacing it with the thrill of discovery.

Our Classroom Vibe

Whether you join our small-group foundation classes in Juhu or opt for one-on-one sessions, the focus remains the same: progress. We monitor eye contact, volume modulation, and peer interaction in every game. It is messy, it is loud at times, but it is deeply effective.

I'm Salonie, founder of Yellow Brick Way. For 15 years, I’ve been proving that children learn best when they’re having too much fun to realize they’re working hard. My classroom is a place where we prioritize messy, hands-on play over boring worksheets.
