Stepping into Character: Solo Performances
Watch my students transform into beloved book characters. From timid readers to commanding performers, this is where they learn to own the stage.
A wonderful performance as Willy Wonka! This student fully embraced the character's quirky personality, using expressive gestures and vocal variety to deliver a memorable monologue.
Here is my student as Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz." She does a beautiful job of conveying the character's journey and emotions, complete with Toto in her basket.
My student shines as the brilliant and magical Matilda. This performance showcases her ability to connect with a character and deliver lines with confidence and charm.
Another fantastic take on Matilda! It's wonderful to see students interpret the same character in their own unique way, focusing on her intelligence and love for learning.
Embodying the delightfully dreadful Mrs. Twit from Roald Dahl's classic. This performance is a great example of character acting, using posture and voice to create a distinct personality.
Another student's take on the mischievous Mrs. Twit. She uses a prop and a unique vocal tone to bring this memorable character to life, showing great confidence on stage.
A magical performance as the Wizard of Oz. This student uses her costume and a commanding presence to portray the powerful ruler of the Emerald City.
Here is a student taking on the role of the Grand High Witch. She uses strong vocal projection and a dramatic stance to capture the character's intimidating yet captivating nature.
A confident and assertive performance as Little Miss Bossy. This student perfectly captures the character's personality, demonstrating great stage presence and clear articulation.
My student takes on the adventurous Thea Stilton. She embodies the spirit of a world-traveling mouse detective, telling a story with energy and enthusiasm.
About Stepping into Character: Solo Performances
It isn't just about the costume or reading lines from a script. In our solo performance sessions, we focus on 'the Big 4': pause, phrasing, emphasis, and pitch. We don't aim for Broadway perfection here, but rather a student who can stand alone, make eye contact, and project their voice with genuine conviction.
Solo performances are the fastest way I have seen a child find their voice. When a student chooses a monologue—whether it's the mischievous Mrs. Twit or the brilliant Matilda—they aren't just reciting text. They are stepping into a different perspective.
The YBW Approach to Performance
We strip away the pressure of 'performing perfectly' and replace it with character study. In my Juhu studio, we break down these monologues into micro-goals. We analyze why a character says what they say, how they would hold their shoulders, and where they would breathe. This is exactly where the Trinity College London framework comes in; it provides the structure, while our creative play brings the soul.
Why Solo Work Matters
- Confidence: Standing alone before a group, even a small, friendly one, is a life skill. It shifts a child from a passive observer to an active speaker.
- Diction & Clarity: We use specific pronunciation drills to clear up the 'tricky words' that shy kids often mumble.
- Critical Thinking: By stepping into a character's shoes, students learn empathy and reading comprehension that goes deeper than just finishing a book chapter.
Whether your child is prepping for a drama competition or simply needs a safe space to get over stage fright, these solo sessions provide that push. We keep the class size small to ensure every student gets time to perform, get feedback, and try again. It is loud, it is fun, and it is entirely focused on their personal growth.
