Jugalbandi Performances: Rhythmic Conversations for Your Event
Experience the beauty of a musical dialogue where tabla meets melody. Whether it is a grand concert or an intimate baithak, I thrive on that spontaneous exchange of rhythms and notes.
A beautiful jugalbandi with the brilliant Shantanoor bhai on santoor during a concert in Jaipur. The interplay between tabla and santoor, especially in Teentaal, is always a joy to explore.
A moment of deep focus during a sarod duet. The goal is to listen and respond, creating a seamless rhythmic foundation that allows the lead instrument to soar.
Playing with the outstanding Samanwaya Sarkar da is always an amazing experience. This is a short snippet from our sitar and tabla duet at the Malhar Festival, organized by ITC SRA in Kolkata.
Exploring complex rhythmic cycles with the amazing Mehtab Ali Niazi bhai. Here we are playing a 'Teentaal in Jhaptaal' composition, a 16-beat cycle within a 10-beat framework, during a concert in Kolkata.
Another excerpt from the 'Udaan' concert with the fantastic Mehtab Ali Niazi bhai on sitar. This Jhaptaal piece showcases the dynamic exchange between our instruments.
A candid moment of musical exchange on stage with sitar player Mehtab Ali Niazi. The smiles and gestures are as much a part of the performance as the notes themselves.
An impromptu riyaz session at the residence of the brilliant Abhisek Lahiri da. These informal musical conversations are where we often find new inspiration and ideas.
A short clip from the Violin Festival in Kolkata, where I had the pleasure of accompanying the brilliant Manas Kumar bhai. The violin's melodic flow offers a beautiful canvas for the tabla.
Sharing the stage with my dear elder brother Indrayuddh Majumder da during the 'Raagswar' concert. The camaraderie we share off-stage translates into our musical connection on-stage.
A performance shot from the Violin Festival with the amazing Manas Kumar bhai. The stage was beautifully set, creating a perfect ambiance for our violin and tabla duet.
About Jugalbandi: Instrumental Conversations
For a successful jugalbandi, technical sound balance is everything. I always insist on a dedicated sound check with the venue team to ensure my Dayan (treble) clarity cuts through the mix while the Bayan (bass) provides the necessary, deep rhythmic foundation that lets the lead instrument soar without being overshadowed.
In the world of Indian classical music, a jugalbandi is far more than just playing alongside another musician. It is a live, musical conversation. When I perform with a sitar, sarod, or violin player, my priority is to listen as much as I play. My training in the Farukhabad Gharana allows me to bring in intricate compositions, like the '16 in 10' cycles I often explore, but the real magic happens in the 'Sawalo Jawab' (Call and Answer) sessions.
I treat every performance as a partnership. Whether it is a grand stage like the Malhar Festival or an intimate home concert, the goal remains the same: to provide a steady, creative canvas that supports the emotional nuances of the lead artist. I have been blessed to share the stage with maestros like Mehtab Ali Niazi bhai and Abhisek Lahiri da, and each experience has taught me that the best music comes when you surrender your ego to the rhythm.

Debjit Patitundi
Music is my sadhana, but jugalbandi is where it becomes a real conversation. I have been blessed to share the stage with incredible artists, and my goal is always to listen as much as I play. It is not about showmanship, but about creating that perfect rhythmic canvas where the other instrument can truly sing.
