About Coach's Corner: Training & Safety Tips

Your safety gear isn't just an accessory; it is your shield. Whether you are choosing 10oz gloves for bag work or 12oz for sparring, getting the padding right is the difference between a long career and sitting on the sidelines with an injury. Always check your gear—if it is worn out or doesn't fit your weight class, replace it before you step back on the mats.

Train Smart, Stay in the Fight

Injuries are the biggest enemy of a fighter. You can’t learn if you’re injured. Our coaches at Xtrem9 don't just teach you to hit; they teach you to stay in the game for the long haul.

  • Choose Your Gloves: Don't use your sparring gloves on heavy bags, and vice versa. Use 10oz for speed and bag work, and 12oz or 14oz for sparring to protect your partner. Your wrist alignment is key—keep your knuckles straight to protect your joints.
  • The Safety Kit: Headgear, gum shields, and groin guards are non-negotiable for live sparring. A single hit without protection can sideline you for weeks. Protecting your skull and body is part of the sport.
  • Fuel Up Right: Eat light before training. An apple or a banana an hour before is fine. Heavy meals will only make you feel sluggish or sick during high-intensity conditioning. Save the big meal for after the grind.
  • Warm-ups & Cool-downs: Never walk into the ring cold. A 15-minute warm-up gets your blood flowing and muscles ready for impact. Post-fight? Stretch it out to normalize your heart rate and help your muscles recover.
  • Listen to Your Body: Trying to hit 100 pushups just because someone else did is a shortcut to injury. Progress at your own pace. Start slow, build consistency, and the transformation will come naturally.
