Authentic Kerala-Style Starters and Small Plates
Hand-crafted appetizers rooted in my family's Syrian Christian culinary traditions, perfect for sharing or a cozy snack.
No party is complete without a bowl of my famous beef cutlets. They are crispy, melt-in-your-mouth, and gone in two bites. I also make them with fish, mutton, chicken, prawn, and mixed vegetables.
This is Kada is Kada, or deep-fried quail marinated in dry spices. It's a delicacy in Kerala and makes for a unique and flavorful appetizer. I serve it here with a fresh green chutney.
Fried tapioca, or 'Kappa Varruthathu', is a beloved Kerala snack. These tapioca fingers are crispy, savory, and garnished with fried curry leaves. It's simple, delicious, and very addictive.
Kanji Payar, or rice congee with green gram, is the ultimate comfort food. I serve it here in a tasting bowl, topped with crispy papadum and a flavorful dry prawn chammandi. It’s a nutritious and flavorful appetizer.
Sometimes a craving for the taste of 'onakkameen' (dried fish) from my childhood hits. When I can't find it, I get creative and make a quick version with canned tuna, fried with onions and curry leaves. It’s a simple, home-style snack.
About Starters & Small Plates
No party of mine is complete without these cutlets, and they are honestly the easiest way to get a taste of my kitchen. Whether you want beef, fish, or vegetable, they are crispy, melt-in-your-mouth, and made to be finished in two bites. I prep them fresh using my own spice blends, just as I do for every home order, ensuring that same childhood flavour reaches your table.
When it comes to starters, I believe in food that sparks conversation. My menu is built on dishes I grew up eating in a house full of laughter—simple, flavourful, and satisfying. Beyond the signature cutlets, I love bringing the taste of 'Kada' (quail) marinated in dry spices, or the comforting, rustic crunch of 'Kappa Varruthathu' (fried tapioca) to the table.
I handle the prep exactly the way my Amma taught me: fresh whole spices ground by hand, no short-cuts.
What makes these appetizers special:
- Handmade Spice Mixes: I don't use store-bought powders. I source whole spices from Wayanad and blend them myself to ensure the aroma is right.
- Versatility: These plates work whether you are hosting a large party, a private dinner, or just want a snack to pair with a drink at home.
- Authentic Heritage: You won't find generic pub snacks here. You will find Kanju Payar (rice congee with green gram) and other Malayalee delicacies that are nutritious and packed with comfort.
I take orders for small get-togethers of 3 people up to large celebrations of 200. If you are planning an event and want to serve something that feels like home, just drop me a message and we can figure out the perfect mix of starters for your guests.
