Carving has always been my favorite way to decorate a surface. I love the texture and flow you can achieve, especially on a dark clay body like this one.
Creating textures on pots adds so much character. It takes a lot of time and patience, but the final look, with its play of light and shadow, is always worth the effort.
This video shows the process of creating a large terracotta vase, from throwing on the wheel to carving the final texture on the surface.
Experimenting with marbling by combining two different clay bodies on the wheel. I am excited to see how the patterns turn out after the piece is fired.
Pottery can be a canvas for painting. This unique vase was decorated with underglaze to create a modern, illustrative design before being fired.
About Advanced Techniques: Surface Decoration & Glazing
When you join our glazing sessions, it is rarely just about dipping a pot in a bucket. You will learn how different glazes interact, why specific clay bodies require unique firing temperatures, and how to troubleshoot those tricky spots where color might run or pool. It is a shared, messy, and creative experience where we all learn from each other's experiments and successes.
At The Potter’s Place, we believe the creative process truly continues once the clay comes off the wheel. Our workshops on surface decoration and ceramic glazing in HSR Layout are designed to help you transition from basic functional forms to finished, expressive art. We dive into technical methods that add personality to your stoneware, such as sgraffito, where we carve through layers of colored slip to reveal intricate patterns, and marbling, where we blend different clay bodies to create unique, organic textures.
What we cover in our glazing workshops
- Understanding Chemistry: We demystify how different glazes react in the kiln. You will learn to predict color outcomes and how to layer glazes for depth.
- Surface Techniques: Beyond just color, we practice carving, stamping, and using underglazes to paint illustrative designs directly onto your work.
- Firing Knowledge: Every piece needs to be prepared correctly. We guide you through the science of double firing and how to load your pieces safely into the kiln.
Who this is for
These sessions are perfect if you have already mastered the basics of wheel throwing or hand-building and want to refine your aesthetic. The Potter's Place
Hi, I'm Bhavya. I started The Potter's Place because I wanted a space where everyone could slow down and connect with clay. We are not just a studio; we are a community that loves getting messy hands, sharing laughter, and watching clay transform into something beautiful.
