I have always wanted to hand-build Groot, and with some guidance, I finally did. Hand-building opens up endless possibilities for creativity, letting you sculpt any shape you can imagine.
The beginning of a sculpture, shaped from a simple block of clay. This piece is in its raw, unfired state, showing the initial form and texture.
The same sculpture after being coated with a dark slip. This step adds depth and prepares the surface for further decoration or firing.
The sculpture is now ready for its first firing in the kiln. This bisque firing will turn the fragile clay into a hard, porous ceramic piece.

About Hand-Building & Sculpting
You do not need a wheel to make something beautiful. Our hand-building sessions are about slowing down and letting the clay take shape under your fingers. Whether you are pinching a simple bowl or sculpting a character like Groot, we guide you through every coil and slab. It is less about perfection and more about the quiet joy of making.
At The Potter's Place, we believe that some of the most expressive art happens when you ditch the wheel and use your hands. Hand-building allows you to connect directly with the material, giving you the freedom to build at your own pace.
Why choose hand-building?
Hand-building is not just for beginners. It is a foundational technique that opens up endless possibilities for creativity. When you work with your hands, you learn to understand the limits of clay, how it stretches, and how it holds form.
We cover three primary techniques in our studio:
- Pinching: This is the most meditative form. By using your thumbs to shape a ball of clay, you create small bowls, cups, and vessels. It is perfect for those who want to feel the clay move.
- Coiling: We roll long 'snakes' of clay and stack them to build walls. This technique lets you create large, organic, and complex vases or sculptures that would be difficult to throw on a wheel.
- Slab Building: We roll out sheets of clay and cut them into shapes to construct boxes, planters, and architectural forms.
Sculpting and Beyond
Beyond functional ware, we encourage artistic exploration. Our sculpting workshops—sometimes led by guest artists—teach you how to add details, texture, and character to your work. From Sgraffito surface decoration to creating figurative sculptures, we help you push the boundaries of your imagination.
Our studio in HSR Layout is a space where we embrace imperfections. If your coil vase is a bit wobbly or your sculpture isn't perfectly symmetrical, that is often where the real character lives. We provide all the tools, aprons, and clay you need. All you bring is your curiosity. Come join us for a session, and let's get our hands messy.
The Potter's Place
I am Bhavya, and this studio is my way of sharing the peace I found in clay. We are not here to mass-produce pottery; we are here to help you get messy, learn at your own pace, and create something that actually feels like you. Come sit with us, enjoy the HSR air, and make something by hand.
