At Tharangini, we believe craft is a universal language. We bridge worlds by blending our traditional South Indian block-printing techniques with global artistry, creating textiles that carry stories across borders.

A look into our cherished collaboration with Bábbarra Women's Centre from Australia. This project involves translating their sacred lino-print stories, like the Yawkyawk mermaid design, into meticulously carved teak woodblocks, weaving a narrative of cultural harmony.

About Global Reach & Collaborations

We don't just print designs; we translate stories. Our collaborative projects, like our ongoing partnership with Australia's Bábbarra Women's Centre, involve a technical bridge where we recreate sacred Indigenous lino-print motifs as intricate, hand-carved teak woodblocks. This requires our master carvers to study the original narrative deeply before the first chisel hits the wood, ensuring the rhythm of the design remains authentic when we apply our organic, natural pigment printing process in Bangalore.

Weaving Cultures Through Craft

Our studio has always been a space for exchange. When we began collaborating with the Bábbarra Women's Centre in Arnhem Land, we didn't just want to reproduce images; we wanted to honor the 'Karri-djarrk-durrkmirri' (working together) philosophy.

The Technical Process

Translating art across media is a delicate act.

  • Lino to Wood: We take the original lino-print tiles from our partners and interpret them through the lens of woodblock carving. Because wood behaves differently than linoleum, our master artisans must adjust the line work to ensure the prints retain the 'hand' and soul of the original artist.
  • Natural Pigments: We apply the same multi-layered, discharge printing techniques used on our heritage sarees to these global designs. This ensures that the textiles feel like a natural extension of the artist's work, rather than a forced adaptation.

Why Collaborations Matter

These projects aren't just about the fabric; they are about documentation. By capturing these sacred stories in woodblocks that live in our archive, we help preserve them. Our work with the Centre for Australia-India Relations has been a cornerstone of this effort, allowing us to host exhibitions at the Bangalore International Centre and create a dialogue where Balanda (non-Aboriginal) audiences can learn about country through the designs.

Whether it is the 'Yawkyawk' mermaid stories or flowering shrubs from the Arnhem Land bush, our aim is to turn our printing tables into a meeting point for diverse cultures.
