When melody meets percussion, a conversation begins. These ensemble setups are where my veena finds its rhythm through spontaneous interaction with fellow artists.

Performing at The Music Academy, Madras, with Burra Sriram on mridangam and Somnath Roy on ghatam. The percussive support is the backbone of any Carnatic concert.

On stage at Hamsadhwani, Chennai, with Vijay Natesan anna on mridangam and Trichy Krishnaswami anna on ghatam. Sharing the stage with friends and seniors is always a joy.

A trio performance at Sri Shanmukhananda Sabha in Mumbai with Vijay Natesan anna and Sriram Subbaraman anna. The dynamic between veena, mridangam, and kanjira creates a rich texture.

Snippets from my USA tour concerts in DC, Atlanta, and Philadelphia. It was wonderful to perform with Patri Satish Kumar sir, Sowmiya Narayanan sir, and my brother Kamalakiran.

A Mridangam and Veena Jugalbandi with the legendary Patri Satish Kumar sir at the Darbar Festival. This was a pure, exhilarating musical dialogue on stage.

The beautiful sounds and colors of the Darbar Festival stage in London. The organizers put so much effort into creating an immersive ambience for both artists and the audience.

A standing ovation from the incredible audience at the Darbar Festival in London. It was a deeply humbling and memorable experience to perform with Patri sir.

A moment of discussion with the director of the Darbar Festival. It's always inspiring to connect with people who are so passionate about presenting our music to the world.

A smile of satisfaction after a great concert at the Darbar Festival. The joy of sharing music is what makes all the travel and hard work worthwhile.

An excerpt from a concert with Anantha R Krishnan anna from four years ago. His accompaniment is always seamless, and he anticipates musical ideas with uncanny spontaneity.

About Jugalbandi & Ensemble Performances

In these ensemble concerts, the magic isn't just in the composition, but in the live rhythmic exchanges. Whether it is a jugalbandi with a tabla player or a traditional trio with mridangam and ghatam, we do not follow a fixed script. We listen, react, and improvise, ensuring that the dialogue between the Saraswati Veena and percussion feels fresh and immediate every single time.

The Art of Musical Conversation

For me, an ensemble performance is an open conversation. While the Saraswati Veena provides the melodic voice—often accented by my own singing—the percussionists act as the heartbeat of the performance. We explore traditional Katcheri formats like Varnam and Raga Alapana, but we also lean into the Manodharma (improvisation) that makes Carnatic music so vibrant.

Why Choose an Ensemble Setup?

  • Dynamic Texture: A trio featuring a senior Mridangam artist and a Ghatam or Kanjira player creates a complete rhythmic landscape. It allows for the intricate Tani Avartanam (rhythmic solo) sections that audiences love.
  • Spontaneous Jugalbandi: If we are performing with non-Carnatic instruments like the Tabla or Sitar, we focus on blending our distinct musical languages. It is a challenge to align North and South Indian rhythmic structures, but that is exactly where the excitement lies.
  • Adaptable Formats: Whether it is a quiet chamber concert at a local sabha or a high-energy performance at a global festival like Darbar, we adjust our approach to fit the venue. We need stage space, specific monitor mixes, and a clear sound check to make sure the subtleties of the veena and the punch of the percussion come through clearly.

My Approach to Collaboration

I treat every ensemble member as a partner. My goal is to never overwhelm the melody with math, but to hide the kanakku (calculations) inside the raga. When you watch a performance, you might see me locking eyes with the percussionist—that is us anticipating the next phrase, testing a new rhythmic pattern, or simply acknowledging a good idea. This is not just a concert; it is a shared discovery of the raga's essence.

I’m Ramana. When I’m not exploring raga nuances on my own, I’m looking for that spark in collaboration. Playing with percussionists is my way of keeping the conversation fresh, and I love how a jugalbandi can turn a standard concert into something totally new.
