Japanese Raku Firing Workshops in Mumbai
Experience the intense, hands-on craft of Raku firing at our Byculla studio. Learn how we use fire and air to create unique, unpredictable ceramic finishes.
A close-up view inside the Raku kiln, where pieces are heated to over 1000°C. The intense orange glow shows the pottery reaching its peak temperature just before being removed for the post-firing reduction.
I am opening the lid of our gas-fired Raku kiln during a workshop. The intense heat and glowing pots inside are a dramatic sight, marking the critical moment before the pieces are moved to the reduction chambers.
Here I am, ready with tongs to remove a piece from the Raku kiln. This hands-on process is what makes our Raku workshops so immediate and exciting, giving you a direct role in the creation of your ceramic art.
About The Art of Raku Firing
Raku is different from standard electric kiln firing. You pull glowing, red-hot pieces straight from the kiln and immediately place them into reduction chambers filled with combustible materials. This process is physically active and entirely unpredictable, resulting in unique crackle glazes and metallic finishes that cannot be replicated.
What makes Raku special at Studio White & Gray? It is the immediate feedback. In our 3-day workshops at the New Great Eastern Mill Compound in Byculla, you do not just watch. You are hands-on with the tongs, managing the reduction chambers and watching the transformation of your own hand-built pieces.
Our process:
- Days 1 and 2: We focus on hand-building forms that survive the rapid thermal shock of Raku. We guide you on specific clay types and construction techniques that hold up under pressure.
- Day 3: The firing. We take your pieces to temperatures over 1000 degrees Celsius, remove them glowing red, and seal them in air-tight containers with combustible materials. The smoke and carbon interaction create the signature Raku look.
This is raw, elemental pottery. You might arrive as a beginner, but you will leave with a piece you created from start to finish. We limit our batch sizes to ensure everyone gets to handle the tongs safely and understands the science behind the thermal shock. If you are looking for a break from the digital world and want to get your hands dirty with real fire, this is the place to be.
