A happy Nerikomi day at the studio. This video shows students creating intricate patterns like roses and grids by layering and shaping colored clay.

The mesmerizing patterns of Nerikomi. This technique involves creating a patterned block of colored clay and then slicing it to reveal the design, which can then be shaped into a cup or bowl.

About Japanese Nerikomi Workshops

Nerikomi is all about playing with colored clay to create patterns that run all the way through your piece, not just on the surface. In this workshop, you aren't just decorating; you’re learning to layer and laminate clay slabs to design your own marbleized or geometric prints. We keep the batches small, so you get plenty of hands-on help from me while we work with these premium, pre-stained clay batches.

Nerikomi involves stacking, folding, and slicing colored clay to reveal intricate designs, almost like a cross-section of a patterned stone. It is incredibly rewarding because the result is uniquely yours—every slice looks slightly different, and the pattern is consistent throughout the entire thickness of the clay.

What happens in the session

I’ll guide you through the entire lamination process. You’ll learn how to handle the different colored clays so they bond perfectly without smudging. Once your pattern block is set, we slice it and shape it into a functional piece like a plate, bowl, or planter. It is a slow, methodical process that really helps you switch off from the outside world.

After the workshop

Once you finish shaping your piece, it goes through a careful drying and firing process. Because Nerikomi involves multiple clay bodies, it requires a precise kiln firing to ensure the colors stay vibrant and the piece becomes food-safe, waterproof, and microwave-safe. It takes about 2-3 weeks to get your finished ceramic, but I promise the wait is worth it when you finally hold your own handmade designer piece.
