Yoga with Props: Deeper Alignment
Props like blocks, belts, and ropes are not shortcuts. They are intelligent tools that help you find your body's true alignment, safely explore deeper stretches, and build a sustainable practice.
Students using blocks to deepen their forward bends. Props help bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to go, allowing for a safe and effective stretch.
Here, students are using blocks and other props to work on Hanumanasana (the splits). This supported practice allows them to hold the pose longer and work on hip alignment without strain.
A student using the wall and ropes to safely explore a deep backbend. The ropes provide support, allowing her to open her chest and shoulders while keeping her lower back safe.
Using blocks under the shoulders to support a deep backbend. This modification helps to open the thoracic spine and makes the pose more restorative and accessible.
Students practicing a drop-back variation using stacks of yoga blocks. This is a great drill to build confidence and spinal flexibility, gradually decreasing the height of the blocks over time.
A student practices a drop-back using a stack of blocks as a target. This helps build the control and spatial awareness needed for unsupported drop-backs.
Another view of students using blocks to practice drop-backs. This method allows them to focus on the arch of the spine and the engagement of the legs.
A student working on a wall-assisted split (Samakonasana). Using props like blocks under the feet helps to maintain alignment and work towards the full expression of the pose.
A class working on forward bends like Paschimottanasana and Janu Sirsasana using blocks. The blocks help to elevate the hips or support the forehead, making the pose more comfortable and effective.
A shoulder mobility exercise using a yoga belt while seated in Vajrasana. This is a powerful drill to open up tight shoulders and prepare the body for backbends and inversions.
About Yoga with Props: Deeper Alignment
In my classes, I don't use blocks just to touch the floor; I use them as extensions of your arms to find length in your spine. When we use ropes or belts for backbends, it is about creating the space to breathe into the pose, not just forcing the shape. If you have been struggling with stiff shoulders or an inability to reach your toes, these props allow us to break down the anatomy of the asana so you can progress without the fear of injury.
Many people think using props is for beginners who cannot do the pose, but that is a misunderstanding. Even after 12 years of practice, I use them to find more depth. Think of props as your personal teacher when I am not physically adjusting you.
Why We Use Props
- Safe Alignment: Using blocks under your hands in a forward bend helps keep your back flat, protecting your spine instead of rounding it to force a reach.
- Spinal Traction: Our rope wall sessions are specifically designed to decompress the spine, offering relief for those who sit at desks all day.
- Confidence in Backbends: Stacking blocks for drop-backs allows you to feel the movement safely, building the confidence required to eventually perform the pose unsupported.
The Philosophy of Practice
I often quote: Navesh dharanam siddhe karanam na cha tatkatha (Wearing certain clothes or just talking about it doesn't lead to success; only practice does). Props help you perform the practice correctly. If your alignment is wrong, the energy flow is blocked. Whether you are working on your flexibility in Ghatkopar or seeking therapy for back pain, we treat the body with intelligence. We do not rush. We do not skip steps. We use tools to understand the mechanics of the body, so you can one day perform the asanas with full freedom, independent of any support.
