About Mohiniyattam Masterclasses & Workshops
Our workshops are not just about perfecting the adavu. We approach Mohiniyattam as an 'Upaasanaa'—a process of dedicated practice. When you join our sessions at our Gottigere Kalari, you get more than choreography; we focus on the subtle nuances of eye movements, torso alignment, and the rhythmic footwork that defines our style. It is an open space where corrections are personal, and the goal is to help you find your own rhythm within the tradition.
We break down our sessions into three distinct formats to suit different learning goals. Our masterclasses dive into advanced 'abhinaya' and expression, often led by visiting maestros who bring fresh perspectives to the classical form. For those focused on the mechanics, our technical workshops tackle the complexities of Talam and lighting design, ensuring you understand how to translate your art to the stage.
If you are looking for an immersive experience, our 'Upaasanaa' residency spans three days, where we focus on learning a complete repertoire item with live musical accompaniment. This gives you the chance to really slow down and understand the lyrical meaning and mythological depth of the piece. We keep our batch sizes intimate, usually under 15 participants, because the Bharati Shivaji style requires precise individual attention, especially for posture and hand gestures.
Beyond the technique, you become part of our collective. Whether you are coming to our studio in Gottigere or joining a hybrid session from elsewhere, you are stepping into a community that values 'samarpanam'—the humble offering of dance. We encourage questions, peer learning, and the occasional 'out of syllabus' jam session. This is not a formal academy where you just stand in line; it is a space to share stories, explore your craft, and grow alongside fellow dancers.
