Our Philosophy and Practice of Mohiniyattam
For us, dance is a form of meditation and a path we walk together. Discover how we integrate tradition with a community-first approach in our Bangalore space.
"Dance so only the dance and energy remain." This video, with a voiceover from Osho, captures the core of our philosophy. We believe dance is a meditation where the dancer dissolves, leaving only pure expression.
Come inside our learning space. This video shows a typical theory and practice session where we break down the 'chollu' (rhythmic syllables) and 'adavu' (steps), creating a supportive environment for students to absorb the nuances of the art form.
About Our Philosophy & Practice
When you step into our Bangalore kalari, you will find that we prioritize sadhana over performance perfection. We spend significant time on chollu (rhythmic syllables) and understanding the emotional depth of an ashtapathi, just as much as we focus on the physical footwork. It is a space where we encourage you to ask why a movement exists, not just how to execute it, because we believe dance truly happens when the dancer dissolves.
Our core belief is samarpanam—a humble offering at the lotus feet of the divine. Whether you are a beginner taking your first steps or a seasoned practitioner, we view every rehearsal as a journey. We focus on the Bharati Shivaji style, but our goal is to create an environment where you can shed your inhibitions and simply exist in the energy of the dance.
In our sessions, you will see us break down the nuances of abhinaya (expression) and netra sadhakam (eye exercises) alongside the technical footwork. We believe that art thrives in connection, which is why our classes are informal. You will often find us deep in conversation about music, mythology, or the history of the form during breaks.
We encourage you to look beyond the performance. If you are curious about our training format, feel free to drop by for a session. We host everything from intensive workshops to casual jam sessions where we mix traditional forms with new ideas. It is all part of our process to make classical dance accessible and deeply personal.
