Holistic Fitness and Yoga Training in Mumbai
Yoga is about more than the mat. I integrate functional bodyweight training into my routine to build the strength needed for advanced inversions and arm balances.
Working on pull-ups at an outdoor park. Bodyweight exercises like this are a great complement to a yoga practice, building the upper body and back strength needed for arm balances and inversions.
About Additional Work
While my practice is rooted in Hatha Vinyasa, I often use bodyweight training like pull-ups to build the functional back and shoulder strength required for advanced arm balances. It is about ensuring your body is as capable as your mind is focused, helping you move safely into those challenging inversions without hitting a plateau.
I get asked often: 'Why are you doing pull-ups if you are a yoga teacher?' The answer is simple: functional strength.
In my sessions, I emphasize that yoga is about the whole person. While we work on breath and flexibility in class, you need specific muscle engagement to hold difficult arm balances or master your first headstand. Relying solely on flexibility can leave your joints vulnerable. By incorporating basic calisthenics—like the pull-ups you see here—you build the push and pull balance that keeps your practice sustainable.
Whether we are in a studio or at a local Mumbai park, my goal remains the same. We focus on 'abhyas' (consistent practice). You do not need fancy equipment to be fit. You need the discipline to show up and move, whether that is through a vinyasa flow or bodyweight sets. If you are struggling to progress in your current yoga practice because of strength plateaus, let us look at your off-mat routine. We can integrate these movements into your personal training sessions to help you break through those barriers.
