Meet the People Behind Our Repair Movement
We are a diverse collective of engineers, teachers, and parents united by one goal: don't throw it, fix it. Meet the mentors who turn broken items into learning moments.
Meet Hamsa, an engineer with a passion for sustainability. She started a bicycle repair workshop in her community and now mentors others, sharing her expertise and inspiring a new generation of fixers.
We are always excited to welcome new mentors to our community. Here, a new volunteer gets involved in a bookbinding session during our Hyderabad workshop, sharing her skills with young learners.
A group of children completely engaged in a bookbinding workshop at Poorna Learning Centre. We partner with schools and community centers to make repair skills accessible to as many kids as possible.
A student named Abdullah, whose curiosity sparked his journey with us, participates in an online class. We love seeing kids like him find an outlet for their passion for fixing and making.
About Meet Our Community
When you join our sessions, you aren't just learning from an instructor; you're learning from parents, engineers, and tinkerers who navigate the same 'to throw or not to throw' dilemmas that you do at home. Whether it is Hamsa troubleshooting a bicycle or Ashok binding a book, our mentors keep it honest by guiding you through the messy process of actual repair, even when things do not work out perfectly.
Repair Cafe Collective is not a corporate school. We are a volunteer-driven network of everyday people—teachers, techies, and students—who have decided that fixing our own things is a necessary life skill. Because we are a collective, our mentors bring diverse perspectives to every workshop.
The Mentors Behind the Tools
Our team is made up of people who just happened to be good at solving problems and decided to share that knowledge.
- Hamsa: An engineer whose own journey started with a simple home project. She now leads our bicycle repair modules, turning dusty gear back into a rideable machine.
- Ashok Urs: An environmental activist who works closely with spaces like the Poorna Learning Centre to show kids how simple bookbinding can save a family library.
- New Volunteers: We are constantly growing. Our workshops in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and beyond are supported by people who just want to help their neighbors keep items in use longer.
Why Our 'Lackluster' Appearance Matters
We are not a shiny, polished initiative. We believe in being transparent. If we hold a workshop and a blender cannot be fixed, we talk about it. If a session has low registration and needs to be paused, we share that too. This honesty is central to how we teach. When your child joins a workshop, they see that failure is just the first step toward a successful fix. They learn that 'Repair Maadi' is more than a saying; it is a commitment to trying, learning, and caring for the things we own.
Repair Cafe Collective
We aren't a corporate training center; we are just a group of parents, techies, and tinkerers who got tired of seeing perfectly good stuff in the trash. We bring our own mix of engineering and life experience to help your child start fixing things, one toy or bicycle at a time.
