Home Essentials Repair Workshops for Kids
We teach children the joy of fixing things right at home, from plumbing basics to furniture care. No boring lectures, just hands-on tinkering.
A clear before and after comparison of a cleaned shower head. This simple fix can dramatically improve water flow and is an easy home maintenance task that kids can learn to do themselves.
Our mentor Ashok Urs teaches a group of eager children the basics of bookbinding. This hands on activity teaches precision and patience, and the kids leave with a book they made themselves.
Teamwork in action as a group of kids work together to repair a chair. This exercise teaches not only mechanical skills but also communication and collaboration as they figure out the problem together.
A young boy learns about sink plumbing by examining the components of a kitchen sink. Understanding how things work is the first step to being able to fix them.
A close up of a student cleaning a faucet aerator. This is a simple but effective way to improve water pressure and conserve water, a key lesson in our plumbing module.
A mentor demonstrates how to use a clamp in a woodworking repair. We ensure kids learn to use tools safely and effectively for tasks like fixing wobbly chairs or broken wooden items.
Children at our workshop are focused on their bookbinding projects. This quiet, creative activity is a great way to learn a new skill and understand the value of craftsmanship.
About Home Essentials Repair
These workshops are interactive, not passive. Please keep in mind that we do not provide the practice materials or tools. You will need to have a basic toolkit—a screwdriver, pliers, and a tester—ready at home for your child to follow along and actually get their hands on the repair work.
We believe in the power of 'Repair Maadi'—giving it a try before deciding something is trash. In our Home Essentials module, we strip away the fear of breaking things further. Kids learn the basics of home maintenance by dismantling and cleaning faucet aerators, studying the structure of chairs for basic furniture repair, and even trying their hand at bookbinding to understand the value of physical objects.
Every session is live on Google Meet, with a mentor guiding the process. We do not aim for perfect, showroom-quality fixes. We aim for curiosity. Sometimes a tap stays leaky, or a chair remains a bit wobbly, but the child walks away knowing why it happened and how to approach the next problem. We keep our batch sizes between 10 to 15 kids so that every participant gets a turn to ask questions and show their progress on camera. If your child is the type who loves to take things apart just to see how they tick, they will fit right in with our community.
Repair Cafe Collective
We are a collective of teachers, makers, and parents who believe that the best way to learn is by getting our hands dirty. Instead of throwing things away, we teach kids how to open, understand, and fix their own world, one gadget or faucet at a time.
