A residence where traditional Indian craftsmanship meets modern maximalist expression. This home functions as a dialogue between teak wood, vibrant Karaikudi tiles, and indigenous Gond art.

The main corridor, a grand promenade flanked by traditional Chettinad pillars. The classic checkerboard floor and coffered wooden ceiling establish a narrative of timeless Indian elegance.

Another view of the main hallway, looking towards a private room. The space is a sequence of portals and frames, creating a rich and layered journey through the home.

The living area, where a massive Gond art piece depicting two elephants becomes the heart of the room. The furniture, a mix of antique and modern forms, is arranged to facilitate conversation and appreciation of the art.

A view into the living room, framed by the solid teak pillars. The scale of the artwork is balanced by the strong architectural elements.

The master bedroom, where a four-poster bed and vibrant yellow floor tiles create a cheerful yet regal atmosphere. A large Gond painting adds a splash of color and story to the wall.

A glimpse into the bedroom through louvered wooden doors, a classic element of traditional Indian homes that allows for privacy and ventilation.

The master lounge, a cozy reading nook with a deep green accent wall. The space is filled with art and comfortable, modern-classic furniture.

A detail of the lounge, where a large Gond painting of a tree is nestled into an alcove, creating a focal point.

A video showing the details of the dining area, with its louvered wooden cabinets and patterned floor tiles.

A carved wooden Hanuman mask adorns the wall, a powerful cultural artifact that adds another layer to the home's narrative.

About House of Gond: A Residential Art Narrative

The central challenge of the House of Gond was incorporating large-scale tribal art without overwhelming the room's volume. We balanced the vivid Gond paintings by anchoring them with heavy, traditional teak wood carvings and muted, earthy floor patterns. This creates a visual rhythm that directs the eye, ensuring the art enhances the architecture rather than competing with it.
