Kathak is more than just footwork. It is the language of emotions, whether I am interpreting a traditional thumri or a soulful ghazal. These moments are where the dance truly speaks.

Finding a quiet joy in this Baithak Thumri. In this intimate setting, I am both singing and performing, which allows for a very personal and direct form of storytelling.

Just me, a beautiful song, and a little bit of 'masti'. Here I am interpreting the classic ghazal 'In Aankhon Ki Masti Ke' from the film Umrao Jaan, just for the joy of it.

'Ghir Ghir Aayi Badaraa', a Kajri about the monsoon clouds gathering. The dark clouds are a metaphor for the nayika's inner feeling of loneliness as she waits for her beloved.

About Abhinaya: Expressions & Storytelling

I focus on the musical conversation, or sawal-jawab, between my ghungroos and the live tabla. This spontaneity brings the storytelling to life in a way that recorded audio cannot match, allowing me to adapt the mood of my performance to the energy of your audience.

Abhinaya is the soul of my Kathak. It is not just about the technical footwork or the speed of my chakkars, but about the story I am telling. Whether I am interpreting a thumri in a baithak setting, or conveying the longing of a monsoon cloud in a traditional Kajri, my aim is to bridge the gap between the dancer and the audience.

When we plan a performance, we choose the narrative together. I have presented Ganesh Vandana for formal corporate openings, and I have performed soulful Sufi pieces for intimate cultural gatherings. I strongly prefer working with a live orchestra featuring tabla, sitar, and vocals, as the music directly influences my expressions and the pace of the dance.

This interaction creates a live, responsive environment where we can feed off the mood of the room. If you are looking for a performance that feels thoughtful, nuanced, and deeply rooted in tradition, this is the style we should explore.

I am Pooja Pant, a Mumbai-based Kathak dancer and teacher. I find real joy in the storytelling aspect of our dance, interpreting classic ghazals and thumris that resonate with people. I would love to bring this same emotional depth to your next event.
