About Kathak Classes
Why Kathak Feels Like Home
Kathak isn’t just a dance for me - it’s my lifelong sadhana. I grew up in the Guru-Shishya tradition, learning from Smt Rajashree Shirke, and I still feel like a student every day. Sometimes I mess up, sometimes I surprise myself, but that’s what keeps it real.
My Way of Teaching
I don’t teach just steps. Kathak is about nritta (pure technique) and abhinay (storytelling). We dive into both, so you get the full experience. Even if you’re scared to sing or go off-key, I get it - I’ve been there too. We learn together.
How You Can Join
- Online classes (Zoom) for group or private sessions - students from all over, from the US to Dubai.
- In-person classes in Mumbai (Vile Parle, Juhu, Virar) for all levels.
- Kathak diploma courses if you want to go pro, plus help with BA/MA degrees.
What We Cover
- Footwork and chakkars (spins) - we do special Kathak dance workshops for these.
- Taal (rhythm) - from Teentaal to Basant taal, you’ll learn to dance in different cycles.
- Abhinay - using Kathak storytelling techniques to express emotions, often through thumri.
Dancing With Live Music
You’ll get to interact with live musicians - tabla, vocals, sitar. That sawal-jawab (question-answer) is where the magic happens.
Performance Opportunities
- Student showcases, from baithak (intimate) to big festivals like Rivaayat.
- Theatrical productions - once, we did a Lion King Kathak musical with 70 dancers!
Who Can Join
Absolute beginners, intermediate dancers, or those aiming for certification - everyone’s welcome. If you’ve never worn ghungroos or you’re ready for the stage, there’s space for you here.

My Story
Namaskar! I’m Pooja Pant, Kathak dancer and actor, Mumbai based. My Guru, Smt Rajashree Shirke, shaped my dance life – those youth festival days still ring in my head. Now, I get to teach my students choreos I learnt 20 years ago, feels surreal! Lost my brother, Abhijeet, so started Abhiratna Awards for young artists, that’s my way of remembering him. I still goof up on vocals, but learning never stops, hai na? Sometimes I just burst out singing during rehearsals!
My Work
Kathak classes & certified courses - Teaching all levels at my Mumbai branches and online. Limited seats, we offer certified Kathak courses too.
Workshops for dancers - I run workshops on Kathak technique - chakkars, footwork. People join from all over, even at odd hours!
Performances & choreography - We do solo, group, and private event shows. Love creating new pieces - inspiration strikes anywhere, anytime.
