Kathak Choreography & Artistic Collaborations
I believe choreography is a conversation between music and movement, blending traditional technique with new narratives for the stage and screen.
A moment from a choreography I created for my students. This piece is a Jhaptaal Paran, a powerful composition set in a 10-beat cycle, performed here by my dance company.
Rehearsing 'Raag Raagini', a collaborative piece with Bharatanatyam dancer Parshwanath Upadhye. This duet explores the dialogue between two different classical dance forms, blending their unique rhythms and styles.
A photo with my wonderful students on the set of the Amazon Prime web series 'Dil Dosti Dilema'. It was a pleasure to choreograph a song for the show and have them perform in it.
About Choreography & Collaborations
When I create a piece, I look for the dialogue between the music and the dancer, not just a set of steps. Whether we are blending Kathak with other classical forms or setting sequences for film, the goal is always to keep the integrity of the art form alive while making it relevant to the project's theme. Every collaboration starts with this core—understanding the story we are trying to tell before we even begin our first rhythmic cycle.
Choreography is not just about organizing movement; it is about finding the pulse of the music. In my work—whether for professional projects like the Amazon Prime web series 'Dil Dosti Dilema' or collaborative stage shows like 'Raag Raagini'—I start with the narrative.
Kathak allows for incredible fusion because of its rhythmic complexity. I often collaborate with artists from other traditions, such as Bharatanatyam, to see how different languages of rhythm can speak to each other. It is a 'sawal-jawab' (question-answer) of styles.
For students and professional troupes, I focus on 'Abhinay' (expression) and 'Nritta' (technique). We break down traditional 'bandishes' (compositions) and reimagine them for modern contexts without losing the classical foundation. If you have an event or a creative project and need something authentic, rather than generic movement, let's talk. We can build a piece that respects the tradition while finding its own voice.

I’m Pooja. I have spent my life in the Guru-Shishya tradition, and today, that discipline guides how I create. I love the messy, wonderful process of choreographing—seeing an idea turn into movement.
