Kathak is more than just footwork; it is storytelling. Explore how I integrate Hindustani vocals and expressive abhinay to bring the dance to life.

Here I am singing and performing a Baithak Thumri. This form of expression combines both vocal music and abhinay, allowing me to convey the emotions of the song through my voice and gestures simultaneously.

A moment of abhinay from a stage performance, where I am interpreting a Thumri. This expressive aspect of Kathak uses subtle gestures and facial expressions to convey complex emotions and stories.

Rehearsing a piece from 'Saptarang', a work I created based on seven Marathi writers. Here, we are depicting how Lord Shiva controlled the river Ganga's flow, using Kathak movements to interpret literary themes.

An exploration of creating the 'Sound of Rain' using only Kathak footwork. This shows how the ghungroos can become an instrument to paint an auditory picture, demonstrating the percussive and expressive range of our feet.

I started learning vocals late, and I'm still a student, sometimes shy or off-key. This is a clip from a Guru Pournima baithak where I am singing, a reminder that it's never too late to learn and grow as an artist.

A clip from a small recital where I am practicing Hindustani vocals under my Ustad, Raja Miya Khan. This journey as a student of music has deeply enriched my understanding and performance of Kathak.

About The Soul of Kathak: Abhinay & Music

I often get asked if you need to be a trained singer to learn Abhinay. The truth is, my own journey with Hindustani vocals—including the times I go off-key—has taught me that it is about the honesty of the expression, not musical perfection. In my classes, we use the thumri as a vessel to explore these emotions, breaking down the lyrics so you can speak with your gestures and eyes, just as I do when performing with live musicians.

Beyond the Steps: The Heart of Kathak

Many students come to me wanting to perfect their chakkars and footwork, but the soul of this dance lies in Abhinay—the art of expression. Whether you are learning in my Juhu, Vile Parle, or Virar studios or joining me via Zoom, we dive deep into the 'why' behind the movement.

Why Music Matters

My practice is deeply tied to the music. I believe that a dancer must understand the taal (rhythm) and the poetry of the music to truly interpret it. This is why I encourage my students to engage with the live tabla and harmonium accompaniment in our in-studio sessions. It creates that 'sawal-jawab' or question-answer dialogue that makes a performance come alive.

My Approach to Abhinay

We focus on the nuance of storytelling. You will learn to use micro-expressions and subtle gestures to convey the complex emotions found in traditional thumris and kajris.

  • For Beginners: We start with basic facial exercises and understanding the mood of the composition.
  • For Intermediate/Advanced: We move into complex emotional landscapes, learning how to handle the lyrical interpretation without losing the rhythmic integrity.

Why Learn With Me?

I treat my classes as a safe space. If you are worried about your voice, your confidence, or your 'lack of talent,' you are exactly who I want to teach. My own path started with hesitation, and I am here to ensure you find your comfort in the art. We learn the technique, but we also learn the tradition of respect, focus, and continuous improvement that my Guru, Smt Rajashree Shirke, instilled in me.
