Kiln Firing Services for Independent Potters
Need to get your clay pieces fired? I run firing cycles at my Whitefield studio and am happy to help fellow potters when my kiln schedule allows.
This information sheet for my teapot workshop shows how my services work. As noted, glazing and firing are offered as a separate, chargeable service, which also applies to independent potters looking to use my kiln.
About Firing Services for Potters
Firing is the most delicate part of the pottery process. Whether you need a bisque fire for your greenware or a high-temperature stoneware glaze fire, I make sure every piece is loaded with care. Since I run specific cycles in my Whitefield studio, it takes a little patience. Please plan for a few weeks of turnaround time, as rushing a kiln can cause pieces to crack.
How I Fire Your Work
Think of the kiln as our extra-hot oven. Your clay is the dough, and without that proper fire, your pots stay fragile. I run my firings in batches to ensure everything is safe and consistent.
- Bisque Firing (Greenware): This is the first step. I take your dry clay pieces and fire them to 1000°C. This makes them tough, porous, and ready for you to glaze. I always do a quick safety check to make sure your work is bone-dry before it goes in to prevent any explosions.
- Glaze Firing (Stoneware): After you glaze, I run a hotter glaze firing up to 1220°C. This vitrifies the clay, making it food-safe and durable. I use dipping glazes and careful temperature control to bring out the color and shine.
Why Choose My Studio for Firing
I treat student work and independent pieces with the same care I give my own. I use a Bartlett Genesis 2.0 kiln, which gives me the precise temperature control needed for stoneware. Because firing is a science, I monitor the entire process—from loading the shelves to the controlled cooling period—so your hard work gets the finish it deserves.
If you have a large batch of work, I also offer full kiln rental, which gives you priority scheduling and exclusive use of the kiln volume for your urgent timelines. Just reach out, and we can discuss what fits your project best.
