Pottery Kiln Firing Services in Whitefield
I see the kiln as the place where clay dreams come alive. Whether you are a student or an indie potter, let me help you turn your fragile clay pieces into strong, finished ceramics. 🥰
I love this part of the process. This video shows how simple, bisque-fired plates are transformed by glaze and heat. The final result is always a little surprise, and seeing the colors come alive after the glaze firing is what makes all the patience worthwhile.
Here is a peek into the entire journey a piece takes in my studio. From being shaped on the wheel and getting a handle, to being glazed and carefully placed inside the kiln with others, every step is filled with love. The final shot shows a fully loaded kiln, ready to work its magic.
Every beautiful ceramic piece starts like this, as humble, unfired clay. These little bowls are what we call 'greenware', waiting patiently for their first trip to the kiln for bisque firing, which will make them strong enough for glazing.
About The Firing Process: Bringing Clay to Life
Firing is a slow process that cannot be rushed. Your pieces travel from greenware to bisque firing at 1000°C, and then again through the glaze firing at 1220°C to get that durable, food-safe finish. It takes a few weeks to do this right, but that moment when the kiln opens and the colors finally pop? It is pure magic.
Think of the kiln as our extra-hot oven. At Mud Effects, we use 'Ember', our state-of-the-art Bartlett Genesis 2.0 electric kiln, to ensure the temperature control needed for high-quality stoneware firing.
The Firing Journey
- Bisque Firing (Greenware): This is the first step. We fire your dry pieces to 1000°C. This hardens the clay and makes it porous, which is essential for the glaze to stick properly later. It also prevents your pieces from breaking during the glaze application.
- Glaze Firing: Once you have dipped or brushed your glaze, we go hotter—up to 1220°C (Cone 5/6). This is the stage where full vitrification happens. It is where the clay becomes strong, waterproof, and food-safe. This is also where the surprises happen, as kiln atmosphere can change how glazes look.
Need a Kiln for Your Work?
If you are a fellow potter in Whitefield or nearby, I know how hard it can be to find reliable firing services. I mostly fire work from my own studio workshops, but when I have space in my schedule, I open my kiln to other artists. I offer:
- Dedicated Full Kiln Rental: Best if you have a bulk order (20–30 mugs) or need a faster turnaround time.
- Per-kg Firing: Great for smaller batches of bisque or stoneware pieces.
Everything is handled with care, from professional loading to ensure heat distribution, to a controlled 24-hour cooling period to prevent thermal shock. Just reach out, and let’s see if we can fit your beautiful pieces into our next firing cycle. 🙏
