Yoga for Beginners: Start Your Gentle Journey
Yoga is not about being flexible or fitting into a pose. It is about showing up for yourself, one breath at a time. Let us start exactly where you are.
Don't know where to start your yoga journey? You don't need to be flexible or strong. This video shows a few simple, foundational poses like spinal twists that we can begin with. The only thing you need is the willingness to show up on the mat.
Backbends are not just for advanced practitioners. Here is an easy backbending sequence for beginners, starting with gentle movements like Marjaryasana-Bitilasana (Cat-Cow Pose) to safely introduce movement to your spine.
The Sun Salutation, or Surya Namaskar, is a fundamental part of many yoga practices. In this video, I provide a step by step tutorial of the Ashtanga Suryanamaskar A, explaining the breath and movement for each pose.
Even a few minutes of stretching in the morning can make a huge difference in your day. This video guides you through a simple sequence of neck, spine, and leg stretches that you can do right on your couch.
If you have a sedentary lifestyle, your body craves movement. This nourishing flow includes gentle stretches and foundational poses like Warrior II and Downward Dog to counteract the effects of sitting all day.
Consistency is the key to progress. Before I could do Garudasana (Eagle Pose) in a headstand, I practiced the standing version countless times. This video shows how mastering the basics builds the foundation for more advanced poses.
Your yoga mat is a sacred space. I believe in taking care of it just as I take care of myself. Here’s a quick tutorial on how to make your own natural, chemical free yoga mat cleaner using vinegar and essential oils.
About Your First Step: Yoga for Beginners
You do not need to already be flexible, strong, or know the difference between a Downward Dog and a Mountain Pose to join. We start with the basics—how to breathe, how to move safely without straining, and how to listen to what your body is actually saying on the mat that day. It is just you, me, and a practice designed to make you feel better, not perfect.
When you are just starting, the most important thing is the 'work-in'—connecting with yourself, not just nailing the pose. I do not believe in cookie-cutter sequences. Whether you are coming in with tight hamstrings, past injuries, or just a lot of stress, we adapt the flow to fit your body, not the other way around.
My classes for beginners are about building a foundation that lasts. We focus heavily on alignment and prop usage—using bolsters, blocks, and straps—to make sure you are safe while you build strength. You will learn the fundamentals of pranayama (breathwork) and meditation to help calm your mind while we work on your physical posture. We take it slow, we celebrate the small wins, and we focus on the 'Sabr aur Shukr' (patience and gratitude) mindset.
If you have been hesitant because you feel stiff or not athletic enough, please let that go. My role is to guide you through these initial steps with kindness and patience, ensuring that by the end of your first session, you feel a little lighter, a little stronger, and ready to show up for yourself again tomorrow.
