Architecture is rarely just a drawing; it is a process of patient, passionate craftsmanship. See how we bring structures to life, brick by brick, using natural methods.

True architecture is born from patience and skill. This moment, capturing the final touches on the Rohtak Dome, reflects the precision and passion that goes into every handcrafted structure I help create.

An artisan carefully places bricks to form a large circular opening in an earthen shell structure. This image captures the hands-on process of building with natural materials, where every element is placed with intention.

A building takes shape in harmony with its surroundings. Here, walls made of natural stone and rammed earth rise from the ground, while the wooden framework for the roof is put in place against a cloudy sky.

This image captures a quiet moment during construction. A worker stands inside a room with unfinished stone walls, showing the raw, elemental state of a building before the final layers are applied.

About The Art of Building by Hand

Building by hand is not merely a choice of aesthetic; it is a structural decision. When we use labor-intensive methods like filler slabs—incorporating clay pots or tiles to displace unnecessary concrete—we reduce concrete usage by 30 percent while improving thermal insulation naturally. This requires training local masons to respect the material, ensuring the final structure is not only durable but fundamentally grounded in the land it sits upon.

Beyond the Blueprint

True architecture is born from the dialogue between the mason and the material. When I look at a site, I am not thinking about how to impose a structure upon it, but how to coax a building out of it. This requires a shift in how we approach construction.

The Precision of Rammed Earth and Stone

Take the Rohtak Dome featured in these images. Creating a circular shell using only earth and brick is a process of extreme patience. It is about understanding gravity, compression, and the honest capability of mud. By utilizing stabilized mud blocks and rammed earth, we eliminate the need for heavy, energy-intensive artificial cooling. These materials breathe, and they allow the building to regulate its own temperature throughout the day.

Why Handcrafted Matters

When you build with machine-made, mass-produced materials, you often lose the soul of the space. Handcrafted techniques allow for:

  • Flexibility: We can adapt to the natural topography of your land, keeping existing trees in place.
  • Thermal Comfort: Natural stone and earth walls act as thermal mass, keeping interiors cool in summer and warm in winter.
  • Skill Development: I believe in training local masons, passing on vernacular techniques so that the knowledge remains in the community.

This is not about nostalgia. It is about practicality. A home that is built by hand is a home that lasts, ages gracefully, and feels like a part of the landscape rather than something sitting on top of it.

I have been working with stone, earth, and clay for over 30 years, trying to bring back the verandahs and breezes we used to live with. For me, architecture is simply a way to help you live closer to nature, using methods that respect the earth rather than conquer it.
